DIY: E9X Homelink Mirror Upgrade to Security+ 2.0 (newer garage door openers)
Hi all, putting this in the DIY since I don't think this hack is well known, but shoutout to the forum user doru who figured a lot of this out beforehand.
If you have a garage door opener or valved exhaust that uses the newer Security+ 2.0 (Homelink 4.0) or later standard, your E9X Homelink mirror doesn't work with it. Rather than buy a repeater that downgrades to the less-secure 1.0 standard (and may not work with valved exhausts or non-owned garages that you also wish to open), you can open up your mirror and swap out the UGDO module in it with a newer version. This guide assumes you already have a Homelink-enabled mirror installed in your E9X, and you're based in the USA/Canada (European garage doors use a different frequency altogether, from what I've heard). Parts/Tools Required: -F10 2012 5 Series Homelink mirror. You can generally find one of these on eBay or at a junkyard. Important: the mirror must have the same mounting bracket as your original E9X mirror. Some later model F10's use a new mounting bracket style.....this is a newer model mirror that has internal connectors that are not backwards compatible to your mirror's UGDO module. The specific model I found had the part numbers 015891025891 printed on the back, however you cannot go off of this part number alone as it is also used on older model mirrors with the outdated UGDO module. You need to ensure it came off of a 2012 or newer car, as well. Other cars like the 2012+ BMW X1 may also work as a donor part, but I cannot verify this so purchase at your own risk. -Plastic trim removal tools, you can find these on Amazon. You will easily scratch the plastic on the mirror if you use a flat head screwdriver. -Patience the mirrors are hard to get apart. Directions: -Remove your original mirror from the car (there are existing guides on how to do this, search for those instructions). -Open your original mirror by prying at the trim point about 1/4" back from the mirror. You'll see the groove where the trim meets the body of the mirror. Keep wedging your pry tools in the groove until you're able to stick the pry tool inside of the groove and into the body of the mirror. CAREFULLY slide your pry tool around the sides of the groove to loosen the plastic clips holding the trim to the body. Once you do this, the trim piece will come off, and this is the only thing holding the mirror itself to the plastic body. -Remove the existing UGDO module from your existing mirror. You'll see it sitting behind the mirror and connected to the garage door buttons. It's held in by 2 plastic tabs, which can be loosened by hand. Also be sure to carefully remove the power connector cable from the UGDO module. -Repeat the same removal steps listed above, but on the new mirror you've acquired. -Swap the module from the new mirror into the old mirror. Everything should fit the same, including the power connector. -Put the trim back on and remount your original mirror with the updated UGDO module installed. -Follow the Homelink instructions to pair your remotes to it, and it should work now! Hope this helps anyone looking for a more elegant and factory solution to making newer Homelink garage doors or valved exhaust systems work with their E9X! Hello all! I'm absolutely stunned that this thread had no replies to alep85's post.
I'd been looking into this same retrofit earlier this year but had given up after buying a mirror with TOO NEW of a Homelink module. The first mirror I bought was from a 2018 F33 430xi, it had the claw type mounting to the windshield, which will not work on E9x/E7x cars. After coming across this thread, I decided to try again. This time my donor mirror came from a 2012 F01 750i. The mirror part number is 51169224345, which RealOEM lists as the following compatibility:
I'm not certain if the donor car needs to be model year 2012 or newer, as LiftMaster started releasing Security+ 2.0 (which requires HomeLink Version 4 or newer) as a soft roll-out back in 2008. Below are pictures from my old and new HomeLink modules. You can tell the version by the FCC ID on the back of the module. The old is CB2GTX2HL3, the new is CB2BMWHL4, denoting HomeLink Version 3 and 4. Hopefully, this further information helps others who come across this and want to do the same!

This is awesome! Just ordered one from a F25 for $48!

Your best bet is to pick a model that had that mirror style late on like the i8 or X3. I bought a homelink i8 mirror from a 2015 car.

What year F25?
Did the 2015 i8 mirror not have the new claw style mount instead of the twist mount?

2012 to be safe.
What's disappointing is my car is a 2011 and it won't work, I think we just missed the change over by a few months.

I think it was because the chassis, not the year. Notice all vehicles on the compatibility list are F chassis, none are E chassis even like E70 X5 which ran into a 2013 model year.

Yeah you'll want to try and keep to the mirror style that matches your 2011. I have a 2011, as well. I believe early F10 5 series + E chassis X1's from later years might be your best bet! I never got the chance to test an X1 mirror but would assume that it also got the newer chip inside of it after 2013 or so. |

This is an interesting thread for me especially, as my HomeLink repeater is… less than optimal.
Would this work with an FLA mirror? I have one installed currently and I don’t want to lose the auto high beams… |

Yes, it should. You only replace the garage door module, everything else remains from your original mirror.

Mine will be in tomorrow so I will update with some notes after the installation.

No, the i8 kept the twist mount for years. Looks like they finally changed it in 2017.

Agreed that you'll need the older twist-style mirror like what your E9X uses. I originally tried with an F series mirror that had the newer style claw mount as a donor part, and the module in that was incompatible with my existing E9X mirror.

Mine from a 2011 F25 worked perfect! Took maybe 15 minutes time.

Great info! Do you happen to know the build date of the donor 2011 F25?

Just bare in mind, that while it has the twist mount, the i8 mirror is wired and behaves like other F-gen mirrors. The i8 mirror can only be used as a donor for the homelink module, which is identical shape & plug to e9x mirrors

Hey there, I recently tried doing this and got an updated UGDO module with a 3 wire connector; however, the connector did not fit into my original mirror. The socket for the connector is slightly smaller and has walls that don't fit. The new UGDO model number matches the one shown above in ATMINSIDE's post... Did you have to repaint the original connector? Those are some mighty small pins.

Worked perfectly
Plus 1 on this mod. I picked up an F10 5 series mirror off eBay for 60 bucks. Swapped the module out of my 2011 e92 M3 mirror and it connected to our new garage doors immediately. I didn't try it, but I wondered if I just could have installed the mirror without opening it up and swapping the modules. Anyone try this?
Also, if you are trying to figure out if your mirror module works with the new Homelink protocol, the Homelink technician told me the old style takes approximately 20 seconds to clear the existing programming when you hold the 1 and 3 buttons down. With the new protocol, it takes only about 10 seconds to clear the former programming. Last edited by Biggerunn; 11-11-2022 at 06:16 PM.. |
