N52 Power Steering Pump Replacement
I am trying to determine the whining noise I am getting and I narrowed it down to the Power Steering Pump. I am not 100% certain, it is causing this but I've replaced the tensioner, the idler pulley, bypassed the A/C, replaced the P.S. reservoir and fluid, and the noise is still there.
Using a mechanic stethoscope, between it and the Alternator, I think it is the P.S. pump Therefore, which pump do you recommend other than OEM (cost issue)? Secondly, is there a good write up on the P.S. pump replacement procedure? TIA Car: 2011 328I xdrive, 140k km Video for reference: |

How did your pump fail? Did you have the noise for some time and then it stopped working or? Mine is functional. No issues other than the noise. |

I replaced all pulleys for maintenance, had the noise for about a month before looking into it and one day it just stopped entirely

Due to how mine failed, I also replaced the power steering fluid reservoir/filter, all the lines, flushed the power steering cooler and the rack...put a new pulley on the new pump as well since I didn't know what the OE one might have gone through. If yours is just at the 'whine' phase you can probably just do the pump and reservoir bits along with new fluid to top off and skip the rest. And note, the 4 bolts/screws attaching the pump bracket to the block are aluminum and must be replaced...the bolts that bolt the pump to the bracket can get reused though.

Right...I already replaced the reservoir and p.s. fluid hoping that would get rid of the whine, but it didn't. Which is why I am thinking the pump is the culprit.
I've also replaced the idler, tensioner, and bypassed the A/C pulley to make sure it is not the problem. |

UPDATE on the issue, in case someone is experiencing the same in the future and is looking at this thread:
It was the P.S. pump. I purchased AAE 5799NH from Rock Auto and installed it myself. The install was easy but take your time and don't rush. The hardest part was getting to the 22mm banjo bolt. I suggest removing the front splash shield and accessing the bolt from below. Also, removing the fan shroud helps free up space around the radiator and it only takes less than a minute to do. I had previously replaced my P.S. fluid and reservoir so no need to do anything there other than add a little bit of oil and burp the system. I also obtained a new hose clamp 32416751127 and two banjo bolt gaskets 07119906463. I reused the original plastic pulley since it looked good with no cracks and was really easy to remove from the pump. |

The BBB pump is just the pump, other than the needed crush washers for the high pressure line it doesn't include any other hardware or brackets.
