Remove rear shunshade from shelf
My rear sunshade is getting stuck occasionally, so my plan is to take the sunshade out of the car and figure out what is going on with it on my workbench.
I have the rear tray removed, but can't figure out how to remove the sunshade from the shelf. Thanks for the help! |

To give you an impression: I retrofitted the mechanical sunshade and it was >2 hours of work.
If the only problem is your shade gets stuck occasionally just drive it up and down 20 times or even better 50 times in a row and the issue will be gone for a long time

Running it up/dn many times won't help, it gets stuck at the top every time. I've already cleaned and greased the top track and all linkage parts with no improvement. I think the issue is in the gearbox.
Can you tell me how you got your mechanical sunshade attached to the tray? |

The DIY shows how to remove the tray. There are minor differences between e90 and e92. Follow this link:

Thanks for the links and the pdf, much appreciated. Dug some more and the mechanism is only available pre-installed onto the tray and there is no way to remove it. Grrr. Will be disassembling the motor gearbox to figure out what is going on and hopefully fix it. At e38.org there are several articles on failure modes in the gearbox.

Thought I'd add some info to this for others who may want to remove their sunshade from the shelf for one reason or another. Of course you can separate the two, obviously BMW had to put them together at some point. Thankfully it's not too hard, just pry the two end caps off, then work along the length of the sunshade pulling the shelf out from the sunshade edge. To reinstall make sure to centre it and then pry both edges back under.
I took a video to show what I mean. Probably not super commonly needed to separate the pieces. I did it because I was swapping the sunshade over to an unfaded shelf I got from a wrecker. Note that if you're fixing the gear drive you don't need to separate these parts, you can unclip the motor itself and I will have a video showing this process available soon. |
