E92 335D 2008 Passenger side total audio loss.
I have a weird case on my hands, the car is booked into for diag but i'm hoping to fix this issue before this date to save some money.
About the car: E92 335d 2008 - BASE audio system (2 front speakers, 2 under-seat subs and 2 rear speakers, no amp.) The issue at hand: I have recently upgraded the speakers in both my drivers side and passenger side to a focal setup (tweeter retrofit.) the upgrade works perfectly on the drivers side, great sound etc... but during the install process I have noticed that the passenger side sub, tweeter and mid have no sound. Diag steps taken: 1. I have tried 3 different speakers in the passenger door so i can confirm the speaker is not at fault. 2. I have removed my Mr12volt system entirely to rule out that being at fault. that did not make a difference. 3. I have noticed that If I unplug my passenger side sub the passenger speaker creates a loud squeeling sound that's almost trying to match the music which tells me the wiring is getting some kind of signal? The weird thing is, from the fault finding I have carried out, it would point to potentially an amp issue but as my car does not have an amp I am totally stumped... Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

Oh boy. It's possible that you have a short somewhere in the passenger side wiring harness, or one of the speakers is bad. With the car turned off, unplug all passenger side speakers and use a multimeter to test the wiring for shorts. If no short is detected, reconnect each speaker ONE at a time to see if it'll play sound. If a short occurred at any point during the install, it is also possible that the head-unit amplifier has been damaged.

The speakers I have purchased are listed as plug and play for my current gen and audio config. I'm going to reach out to them later today and see if they have had any other customers with similar issues. Thank-you for the links and information I'm going to try and look into this, the new speakers (tweeter) did come with some sort of capacitor/electronics box that must sits in-line between the speaker and the tweeter which I presume has something to do with levelling the resistance to what's expected but cant be sure. |

From what the electrician has said, it seems the headhunt outputs with an impedance of 4 ohms to the two front speakers and 2 ohms to the rear two speakers, although the aftermarket speakers are 4ohms, as you can imagine adding the additional tweeter on each side has reduced this to an estimated 2ohms, potentially frying the amp inside the head unit for that side of the car... Even more annoyingly, I have just found the actual website of the creators of my speakers and they specifically state not to use it as a retrofit setup and only on models that support tweeters from factory... annoying. I'm going to test removing the tweeters from the setup tomorrow and pray that it hasn't fried my head unit lol. |

If you want a decent stereo system you are going to have to add
and amp . BMW stereo systems have been extra crappy since the E46. I drove and M2 the other day as a loaner for a recall of which I have had 5 . The stereo was crap . The 12 watt of being generous output of the head unit just won't cut it. Even the Hi Fi system with it's weak amp is crap . The head units on these can be a good music source if they are properly amplified. You can get pro head units on ebay pretty cheaply but they usually have to be programmed to reflect the type of output needed of which there are three. The trend toward multiple small speakers with a sub woofer is a big mistake most of the richness of real music is in the center to the fringes of center.
