Are my turbos cooked?
I have a 07 335xi (just hit 150k miles) it makes sub 5psi at wot, i have the 30ff code, no engine light or limp mode, car is just very sluggish, has ebay bov, vrsf charge pipe, intercooler and piping, it has some cheap boost gauge in it but its reading the same as my mhd, i am also running just your basic ots stage 1+ tune, i have wastegate rattle but no smoking from exhaust, are my turbos just killed in a strange way? or do i have a boost leak somewhere? i’ve already checked that all connections are secure/tight, any help would be great as i’d like to figure this out as it’s been an ongoing problem for a long time

First, hi GoRomeo, you helped me on my thread!
I also have 30FF, no CEL but my boost was at -0,1Bar at one time. That was peak. What I now am convinced is my issue is that the wastegate arm loosened over time on both turbos. I have one Downpipe off right now and at 5,9inHG the wastegate is still open and it only closes at 7-10 inHG. Check for vacuum leaks, then boost leaks and maybe test your wastegates, whether they close under vacuum. Edit: my issue is so bad that I got gapped by a 90hp Honda Civic......... gapped........ But I think I can fix it if I can get the 2nd DP off |

Try to reach down to the turbo arm rod see how much movement you feel? ENGINE COLD OF COURSE! If you feel lots of wiggle play then try to turn the rod a few turns see if that helps. I dis this a few months ago and seems like it helped. I also replaced vacuum lines and Boost solenoids.

Very hard to say from here. If your turbos are rattling, your wastegates are either worn or improperly adjusted--either of those can also cause underboosting.
It's likely your turbos are nearing the end of their life but there are quite a number of things that can cause it. They make rebuild kits that can replace some portion of the worn wastegate arms but not sure it's worth the labor for 150k mile turbos. You'd need to do a pressure test to start or you can check the wastegate arms to see if adjusting them helps. |
