Aux. input MP3 help

I have an '06 E90 w/o i-drive. I have a 3.5mm Aux. in jack in the center console along side the power supply (lighter). I have read all I could find on here and it is still not clear what I can do with this.

Simple(ish) question.
Can I by an 8gb MP3 player off ebay like this one, (http://cgi.ebay.com/Black-8GB-3RD-MP...QQcmdZViewItem)
for like $30 and plug it into the 3.5 mm jack and play, using my radio controls to control it in the auxillary mode?

I bought this car used and did not get owners manual for the car or the radio stuff. I have since downloaded the owners manual for the car, thanks to you guys here, but nothing for the stereo system yet.

As you can see I am new to the whole "ipod" world, I still have walkman for godsake.

Thanks for some input.

With the aux-in jack you can plug in anything that plays music pretty much with an applicable cable, but you won't be able to control the music with the radio controls. Of course you can control volume, but you'll need to change songs, etc. on the MP3 player. At least that's how it works with my iPod. Good luck.

That is correct.
You have a couple of options:
get a long cable so you can have the mp3 player outside the compartment
and near you so you can control music selection.
Else, if you get an ipod, you can get an ijet device which is an RF remote control. Leave the ipod inside the compartment and glue the
remote control to the back of the steering wheel.
I actually have one that I don't use. PM me if interested.

I also have a 06 E90. I tried the AUX input in the arm rest but you can't change the tracks with the car's controls. I have been doing a lot of research and found one option. Other options only go up to 2005 and the newer BMW's can come with a USB port in the arm rest and can use a portable hard drive or USB flash drive. So our only options it seems is an IPOD adapter and an IPOD. It's from the dealer and can cost around $500 with installation. Here is a link to the BMW site. Hope it helps you.

Thanks for the help guys. Evil, I did see most of those posts about other options for USB ports in the glove box and such. I don't think I'm going that route.

OK then what the ......... is the 3rd stereo option for? When I scroll through to go from radio/CD/aux. What is the aux made for?

for your auxilary input, thats what the jack in the glovebox is!!! Its made for exactly that, an auxilary input. Basically it turns your car stereo into a a speaker for your ipod/phone/dvd player/computer etc etc.

OK now I get it. The struggle I was having was that I would scroll to the aux. on the stereo and (without trying) just expect it to work as a CD system would, with some sort of track selection/random play/Auto.

Now I see that volume is component to that part of the system.

So, is the input for his model different than on my '09? I just plug in a USB flash drive and have full control over the music.

Do you know what functionality you will have with this over the ipod controls? Can you search, do random play, and what will the display of the songs look ike, does it display ID3 tag info?

Yes, he only has the 3.5mm port, not the USB option.
