Water pump codes thrown a bunch 10k miles ago. Nothing since
Hey guys, I recently bought an e91 6mt 328i and a bimmergeeks scan tool and subscription and just got around to scanning the car. I got the 2E81 and 2E82 codes obviously pointing towards a water pump failure. Upon further inspection however, I noticed that the last time the code was thrown was over 10,000 miles ago. Should I be concerned about this? The previous owner didn't specify anything about a water pump being replaced or any water pump problems. Thanks

Congratulations on what should be a GREAT car! I'd clear the codes and monitor for issues, but probably just voltage irregularity in the BSD bus.

Wait so like you pay for a subscription to scan your car? Does that come with troubleshooting as well? I just picked up a Schwaben scanner and has done everything I need it to do outside of battery coding for one time price.
It's hard to say for sure, keep a preventative eye out for more codes down the road. |

Strada has got it covered. One time purchase is the main reason I bought it.

1) What is build Mo/Yr. & Last-7 Characters of your VIN? NOT all E91's are Same. 2) If you have BimmerGeeks ProTool, there are THREE different Licenses you can purchase for Software install. I presume you have either the "Diagnostic" License, or the "Master" License that includes BOTH Diagnostic & "Coding"? 3) Most folks lack understanding of capability of their E9x Diagnostic capability: a) Fault Memory which includes: i) Fehlerspeicher: or Error Memory, only for error memory entries with error class information >= 10 Hr ii) Infospeicher: or Info Memory, only for error memory entries with error class information < 10 Hr iii) Historyspeicher: or History Memory; This is a Historical List of Faults in PowerTrain Modules (DME, EKPS, EGS, VGSG, DSC). This history (last 10 Fault Codes) remains (with mileage & other details) after clearing "Fehlerspeicher". INPA can read "History Memory". Some Scan Tools can read History Memory as well. Check your ProTool Documentation/ Manual to see its capability. That is VERY helpful with "New-to-You" vehicles. b) Freeze Frame Data: is a "Snapshot" of system conditions at moment Fault Code was saved. It includes such things as Mileage (km), Engine Temp, RPM, Load, sometimes Voltage, etc. Which parameters are saved depends upon the Fault & System/ Module. c) Live Data: Real Time display of Inputs, such as sensor signals, as received by a Module, such as Button Pressed, Door Contacts Closed, ECTS Temp calculated from voltage signal, RPM, Cam Angle, Coolant Pump Speed (as % of Max Speed), IHKA Flap Position, etc. d) Activations/Triggering: Activate motors, solenoids or lights. Such as Activate Coolant pump at particular % of max speed, and see if actual speed matches Target Speed. Difference between Target (Sollwert) & Actual Speed is "Speed Deviation". Fuel Pump testing is similar. Suggested "Next Steps": 1) Read ProTool Documentation/ Manual & understand/ Outline its ENTIRE capabilities; 2) See if it shows "History Memory", & if so review & SAVE that data, not only for the Coolant Pump/ DME History Memory, but ALL PowerTrain Bus Modules (you have 4 on MT X-drive -- NO EGS). 3) To get idea of current Status of Coolant Pump: a) Read Part# Label on Pump & also Brand (such as Pierburg); you can Lookup that part# in RealOEM.com Parts Catalog, & see period during which that part was made. For instance, my 3/2007 build 328xi E91 has a Pierburg Pump with part# 11517545201, made 10/06/2006 to 02/09/2007. So I have ORIGINAL Pump, still working FINE today, at 141,000 miles. 4) Assuming ProTool can "Activate" the Coolant Pump (connect to DME & see what components can be Activated/ Triggered). INPA has 3 possible selections for Target Speed: 5%, 50% & 95%, and shows Actual Speed (%) and ECTS Temp. I would suggest Activating at 50% & 95% of Max speed, & checking for "Speed Deviation". ANYONE who has used ProTool to Activate Coolant Pump, Please Advise of the procedure you used to check "Speed Deviation" upon activation. 5) 5 years ago when I did that (using INPA), there was NO deviation at 50%, but at 95%, the Actual Pump Speed was only 88%. Yet, I have NEVER had 2E81, or any OTHER Coolant Pump Fault Code. So my belief is that if no deviation at 50% of max speed (which is normal pump speed range), the fact that it won't do 95% of max speed is NOT significant. YOU should test actual vs. Target Speed (check for Speed Deviation), using Activation of Pump at 50% & 95%, to get a "baseline" of what your pump is currently doing. Recheck every ~ 6 months (when do complete Scan, Error Memory, ALL Modules). 6) Read, SAVE, Post Error Memory with Freeze Frame Data (Most detail available) for 2E81 & 2E82 Fault Codes. Do this BEFORE you clear the Codes, or the FF Data/ details will be LOST. We can ALL learn something from your data. One common Failure of Coolant pump on N54-engined E9x's is due to cracking of PLASTIC pump housing, with resultant Coolant Leak, per Forum Posts. The N52K Pump (at least my 2007 model, is NOT plastic, and is subjected to LESS Engine Heat due to lack of Turbo's. I will retest mine within a week & post back, but so far (7 years+) I would NOT change Pump/ T-stat "Preventively", particularly if you drive locally. George |

Congrats on the awesome choice of car!
I absolutely would change the water pump and thermostat if you had these codes. My 330i was intermittently showing codes for the water pump even though there were no obvious signs of failure. I believe it will throw codes before failure occurs, even if it’s asymptomatic, and there’s no telling when it will actually fail!

It's been 10k miles. Don't worry about the water pump. It'll let you know if it's having problems.
Finding an OG failure prone water pump from 2007ish would be pretty unheard of in 2024. Piersberg really figured the pumps out in the early 20-teens. The revised editions basically last the life of the car. ----------Ninja Edit I guess if you're still worried about it, stick a mirror down to see what's on there. You should be able to see the part number on the rear of the pump looking forward with a mirror from the top of the engine bay. If it's a Piersberg .12 or .13 (if memory serves) you're good. If it's got Chinese lettering... keep an eye on it.
