Three HPFP in two weeks
Two weeks ago while cruising on the highway, I got the dreaded Engine Failure message. I made it home and took it to the dealer. The problem was diagnosed as HPFP failure. Two days after I got the car back, the new pump failed again (Engine Failure). Took it back to the dealer and it was diagnosed as the same problem. This time they also tested the fuel, but that was fine. So two days after getting the car, I'm still having the same problems with Engine Failure. So the car is back at the dealer.
Has anybody experienced this? The car was fine for the first 8K miles, but now it won't go for two days after replacing the pump. This is really getting ridiculous and I'm getting tired of driving a different car every couple of days.

Does that qualify for a lemon in your state? I know in California, it's a lemon if the same part fails 3 times in the first year.
I have been following the HPFP issue on this forum since the 335i debut in North America and sadly it's hit or miss. There's a member that has over 50,000 miles on his 335i and still on the first pump. And there are members who had a faulty pump within the first week of owning the car. |

Don't know of the top of my head, but I picked it up in Munich in mid-November. So it's either 10/07 or 11/07.

Ordered 335xi on 5/29/08, took deliverly July 21st. 650 miles on the car. Today during routine driving, message that says "service engine soon, reduced power". I'm guessing this is the HPFP failure? Waiting for a call from service to tell me what it is. Pontiac G6 loaner

Started reading online about lots of fuel pump failures and some related to gas. Last fillup was at a BP station. I have only filled my bmw up at that same station these last 3 weeks of ownership, 93 octane. I should say that even if it is fuel related my 1999 VW Golf fills up at that same station with zero problems.
Nik23 - any patterns related to your fillups? |

Sorry to have threadjacked nik23's thread, posted here for comraderie. But just got a call from service saying a cylinder misfired, everything is fine, engineer test drove it and will do it again and it is all fine. I asked if it is still idling rough, they say that is all clear. I asked if this will be documented on the paperwork, they said yes it will. Not sure what to do - makes me glad to know nothing major is wrong with it, but I don't like knowing my car is misfiring at 600 miles in. I'm guessing all I can do is keep documentation and hope it doesn't happen again.

I finally got the car back on Thursday evening. The fuel pump was replaced, and the technician claimed that there was carbon buildup on some valves. This was cleaned and afterwards they took the car for a test drive, during which the car promptly failed again. This time it was the fuel injector so it was replaced. The car seemed to be running ok until today. While cruising on the highway at about 70mph the car starts hesitating and misfiring. Soon after the "Engine Failure" and the engine light come up and the car drives like crap. Just as before, sometimes restarting the car clears up the "Engine Failure", sometimes it doesn't, but when you're on the highway it's not always convenient nor safe to stop and reboot your car. I'm just completely fed up with this car. It's been giving me nothing but trouble for the last month. I'm going to look into the lemon law in Florida, but not quite sure where to start? Has anyone ever done this? Do you start with the dealer, BMW NA, or somewhere else? The other problem that I might have is that the car wasn't technically purchased in Florida. I purchased it from a dealer in Illinois, but the car was never delivered or registered there since it was ED. Furthermore, I picked up the car is South Carolina (Performance Delivery) where I got temp tags and then drove back to Florida. Would I still qualify for Florida lemon law?

NIK23, I feel your pain. I am in a similar situation. 1 replaced at 500, another replaced last week at 1405, and soon...another to be replaced within a mile of that! no joke. I picked it up, drove it towards the exit of the dealership, and went into limp mode. It was unreal. The car has less than 1500 miles and is about to go on it's 4th pump. I will keep you posted on my situation as well.
As far as lemon'ing...here is the info I have. Lemon'ing is the last thing BMW wants to go through. They'd rather do a buy-back than go through legal process of deeming the car a "lemon." Speak to BMW NA, as they are the ones that will give the yay/nay on those situations. Since it goes through BMW NA, the location of your dealership should not hinder this process, as BMWNA takes the responsibility, not the franchised dealership. All that being said, my brief conversations with both dealer and BMWNA have been quite pleasant, all sides have been very professional. Best of luck to you, and I will fill you in on my situation. Please do the same if possible |

You honestly need to file a complaint to the NHTSA.

My E92 production date is 10/07 as well, only problems I have had (knock on wood) is a loose drivers seat and sunroof issue, which I rest myself and problem never came back.
