Information from key or car?
How much information can be gathered either from the key fob, or the computer at the dealer?
can they find out top speed, top RPM? how often over redline? anything else interesting like that?

I was told the key fob will allow BMW to get a specific number of different drivers of your car. ...even 17 yr old girls register! Who knew...

My friend at work has a 525i and just took it for some work; he has some rattling in the passenger side door. Any who, the service tech that was working on his car walked up to him and chatted for a while. The tech said to him, "you don't really wait much after you start your car to begin driving."
My friend was was stunned. How did this man know this? Apparently the car records more than you know. If it records the average time you let you the car idle after starting it, who knows what else. It probably knows how many times you've red-line it and for how long. I've heard that insurance companies nowadays ask for the diagnostic data off the car so they know how fast you were going for sure when there is a big collision (if the car supports that). Big Brother in our bimmer, oh no!!

I thought the keys/car only records diagnostic codes/error codes. The memory capacity has to be huge for the key/car to act as a blackbox on wheels

Key only holds specific service details, and milage
The cars records a massive amount of info, but most isnt available to the dealer. If you say make a large engine claim on BMW, they will send their own techs to you dealer, who will download the other information to see what caused the problem. They can see everything from throttle positions, engine revs, clutch position, brake position, ABS, DSC, fuel levels, coolant temps, gearbox temps, everything for a couple months worth of driving. They need a lot of that info to figure out what caused many failures, so they can fix it on other cars

Unless you have some sort of a top secret clearance, I don't see how you can arbitrarily commit to a 25 year period. But then again, if you have nothing to hide, no problemo, you know? IMO, I think that the military and bodies of government have technology that's far more advanced then you and I will ever know about. I mean, if google and other companies can zoom in on your license plate from outer space... ________ EXTREME VAPORIZERS Last edited by HappyG; 05-17-2011 at 02:13 AM.. |

He has a '05 525i so I don't know if they have a similar startup procedure. I know the '06 has the same magnesium alloy engine we do which must mean it has the electronic water pump, etc... So those new 5-series with the inline-6 should probably have startup instructions identical to ours.
