Seems like lower is better, but there are drawbacks (increased wear on water pump, decreased fuel economy). Since we are in a colder climate, should I bother with changing the temp from stock?
You talking about water temp?

Looks like I'll be driving up to southern ON (mainly the GTA) during winter months fairly regularly for the foreseeable future, and I'd like to select a winter tire for our E90 328i accordingly. What do you all like to run? Hit me with your favorite makes and models!

...Or, if you're a tire nerd...

Do you prefer a "Nordic" type winter tire, which goes balls-out for snow/ice traction at some expense to wet/dry? E.g., Michelin X-Ice, Continental VikingContact, Nokian Hakkapeliitta, Bridgestone Blizzak WSxx, etc.

Or do you prefer a "continental European" or performance winter tire, which is still good on snow/ice and much better on wet/dry? E.g., Pirelli Cinturato Winter, Michelin Pilot Alpin, Continental WinterContact TSxxx, Bridgestone Blizzak LMxxx, etc.

I feel like my knee-jerk reaction is to go for a Nordic type, but... how often does southern ON see the kinds of conditions where Nordic-type tires really shine?

Both of my year-round bimmers have Michelin X-ice's on during winter months. They are fine but driving in deep snow needs extra attention. Leave more space between you and the vehicle ahead of you and brake very gently.

Go for the Nordic's. I'm running Bridgestone Blizzaks on my e92 and was very happy during the recent massive snowstorm. Was climbing hills and stopping quickly and felt all around very confident in those conditions.

To me the wet/dry winters are kinda a moot point as you drive wet/dry conditions all the time on your summers with no problem (of course still with caution but you get my point). My rationale is that I want the tires that will handle to worst conditions the best but to each their own. I also get up north a lot so I hit the snow more often than just the GTA.
