BMW 320i E92 (2011) – Unstable driving behavior and climate control issues

BMW 320i E92 (2011) – Unstable driving behavior and climate control issues after purchase | Fault codes 2E85 / 2EF7 / 2AA8 / 30C1 / 30EA

Hello everyone,

I am looking for advice regarding several engine-related issues on my BMW.

Vehicle details
BMW 320i E92 Coupe
Model year: 2011
Mileage: 278,000 km
Engine rebuilt at approximately 180,000 km

At the time of purchase, the overall condition of the car appeared good. During the test drive the engine ran smoothly, there was no limp mode and no warning lights. After roughly two weeks of driving, it has become clear that the car does not drive optimally and additional issues have surfaced.

Driving behavior and engine symptoms
  • The driving behavior is inconsistent but structurally unsettled:
  • Slow and delayed throttle response
  • Jerky acceleration, power delivery is not linear
  • Occasional abrupt behavior during downshifts
  • Performance varies noticeably between drives
  • Fuel consumption appears higher than expected
  • Noticeable exhaust fumes when stationary (e.g. at traffic lights)

Climate control issues (possibly related)

In addition to the driving behavior, I am experiencing issues with the climate control system:
  • During longer drives, the interior temperature rises above the set value
  • The air conditioning mainly works shortly after starting the engine
  • Once the engine is fully warm, the cooling effect decreases significantly
  • Recirculation works unreliably: when stationary or in slow traffic, exhaust or fuel odors enter the cabin. It is not possible to determine whether these odors originate from my own vehicle or from surrounding traffic

Read fault codes

I scanned the vehicle myself and found the following fault codes.

Primary fault indicators
  • 2E85 – Electric coolant pump: no communication
  • 2EF7 – Map-controlled thermostat: electrical circuit interruption

These codes point toward an issue in the active engine temperature management.

Additional fault codes
  • 30C1 – Variable oil pressure control not responding as expected
  • 2AA8 – DISA (variable intake system) malfunction
  • 30EA – DeNOx catalytic converter sulphurization

Questions to the community
  • Is there a recognizable pattern or relationship in these fault codes?
  • Where would you start diagnosing this issue in a logical and efficient way?
  • I still have one month of warranty left: what would you advise me to report to the seller or workshop to ensure the root cause is properly addressed rather than individual symptoms?

Any guidance or shared experience would be greatly appreciated. My goal is to have the problem diagnosed correctly while warranty coverage is still available.

Thank you in advance!
