How long can you change options after car ordering ?

Hi,

I was wondering how long can the car configuration be changed after the car is ordered and the waiting period begins ?

And can you change everything about the car in this time ? Are there any restrictions ?

No one can give you an answer to that. It depends on what slot your dealer gets you into, in which production week. In other words, dealers have cars of certain models going into production for both pre-committed (sold) and what will be showroom/lot models in various weeks going out into the future. When you put your money down, they will likely find the first slot they have not previously committed that they can use to make option changes against for what you desire. That becomes your car vs a generic one that would have come to them for sale on the lot.

...so, the real thing you should do is ask the dealer what production week you have if you've placed your order or if you have not, part of your negotiation should be when would your production week be? In my experience I knew the final date to make changes would be a little over a week before 9/1, as I had a "1st week of September production date". I took no chances and confirmed my final options 2 weeks prior to yesterday. It flipped over into a status where I could not make changes early last week or late the previous week some time. Some people on the boards have recently reported trying to make changes within a week of production start and have been unable to do so. Your CA can confirm to you approximately when the cutoff is for the slot you end up with -- it seems to me like 7-14 days before your production week.

(This is not average, but as for my specifics, my '09 E93 was ordered 7/16. I knew I'd wait longer for the new MY to start up as mfg is shut down during the month of August when the plant converts over to the new MY. My E93 will be completed as planned this week ... by 9/4 according to this morning's check with Owner's Circle.)

Call your dealer and ask for your production number and you can track your vehicle through the BMWUSA site.

What WDW1Fanatic said.

I changed my options a couple of times. My dealer accommodated each time, but warned me that late changes can result in errors. i.e. Communication has to go through Dealer-->BMWNA-->BMWAG with potential for human error each time.
