Hi, E84 came with both petrol (gas) and diesel engines—does anyone know if there’s a difference between the gasoline-powered and diesel 8HP transmissions that would matter for this retrofit?

Hello Alex.
Quote:
I'm a bit stuck on the paddle wiring and was hoping you could clarify something for me. Here is what I observed: ![]() ![]() ![]() E84 X1 (8HP): The diagram shows the signal entering the JBE via X14272, and exiting from X14271 Pin 38 -> Transmission Pin 10. Pin 22 is not marked on this diagram. E84 X1 (GM6): The diagram shows the signal entering the JBE via X14272, and exiting from X14271 Pins 22 and 38 -> Transmission (EGS_UP/DOWN). E84 X1 (ZF 6HP): The signal comes out of X14271 Pin 22 -> Transmission Pin 12, while Pin 38 is grounded. Based on this, I have two questions: Should I intercept the signal at what appears to be the "input" connector (X14272) or just use the "output" connector (X14271)? Between Pin 22 and Pin 38, which one should be grounded and which one should go to the 8HP Pin 10? Thanks you! |

I'm extremely new to BMWs. Been fixing up a 06 330i I picked up from a friend for super cheap. Got the bulk of the maintenance items addressed. Took it for a few drives and got some faults for the trans so. Instead of sinking money into a GM trans with 190K and I highly doubt the fluid and filter was ever serviced I'm ordering up 8HP swap parts.
Has anyone figured out if the CAS3+ is completely necessary? Also, looking into the JBE III M in my search I'm coming up with PL6 JBBFE III a compatible module to use? Once again I apologize for the extremely rookie questions. I'm slowly learning from my research on my own. Thank you guys. **EDIT** Realized I actually have the ZF 6HP19. CAS3 isn't mandatory, but it helps if you buy it. I recommend to check the Discord channel and drop sll your questions there |

I realized I have the 6HP19 and decided due to the complexity of the retrofit to service and not being able to get matching DME/CAS/Key so I've made things harder for myself. I ordered from FCP a service kit for my current 6HP19 and hoping a proper service allows me to take my time with my 8HP45 swap. Last edited by Howse_Built; 01-25-2026 at 01:41 PM.. |

Might be a stupid question but my E90 335i is 11/08 MY, and based on realoem it should have the 6 bolt crank. Currently gathering parts for a 8hp45 swap but stumped at the flexplate part. Looking into sourcing a N55 Torque converter but I've read mixed information online. With the N55 torque converter, it should bolt right up to the stock N54 flexplate without requiring swapping right? You mentioned some options so in your case what did you end up using? Dope build btw, considering the OEM route over CanTCU or TL for cost but not sure if I want to go down the rabbit hole of wiring like you did.

Very nice guide and a lot of other useful info, thank you guys
Is there a same way to fit 8hp to a diesel E90 like M57? I read that diesel car DDE does not work with 8hp and you need a cantcu which brings it to a completely different budget.. i have a 2005 e91 330xd with 480tkm, my 6hp is quite tired now and im thinking is it better to rebuild, replace with the same but fresher 6hp26x or swap to an 8hp45x |

Guys, just a small update. I’ll be updating the guide soon.
I successfully did an N55 8HP swap a few days ago with zero errors and working cruise control in 8th gear. Findings: • Pins 3 and 12 were already occupied in the 6HP connector on this car. Pin 3 = PA-Bus, Pin 12 = paddles. I moved them to the correct pins in the 8HP connector and the paddles worked immediately without any extra wiring, keep in mind, this is an LCI car. Not sure what the PA-Bus does exactly, but it’s the same wire used for the Comfort Access antennas. • It’s very convenient to reuse one of the old, unused wires for KL.15 (12V wakeup) from the 6HP connector under the car. This allowed me to install the new shifter by only removing the iDrive trim and old shifter, then just adding PT-CAN. I tapped the PT-CAN from the LDM. The whole shifter install took only 10-15 minutes this way. • RPM didn’t work straight away. The cluster needed updating and a coding change: “For N55 set DZM_DISP_RPM to wert_01”. • Cruise control worked without any changes in the DSC coding. All stock coding with NCS except for the CAS. • DCT shifter works too! But you will have to remove the shifter cable. I’m pretty busy at the moment but will try to update the guide soon. Hope this helps speed up your swaps. All in all, this swap should be doable as a regular gearbox swap with only about 30-45 minutes of extra work for the wiring and shifter installation.
