Add fan to OEM oil cooler
Has anybody tried this? Seems like it would make the existing setup much more efficient at a much lower cost than the upgrade units. With a thermostat of course so it does not run when not needed.

Uhhh my heat problems came about on the track. When you're averaging 60+ mph (140+ on the straights and 38mph in some corners) a little fan isn't going to help you much. In fact, you might get more airflow without a fan.
If you're putting along on the street or doing short 11-12 second bursts on the drag strip, you won't benefit from additional cooling, imo. |

anyone running the car hard enough to worry about oil temp should just get the VK motor Oil Cooler upgrade.

For the track of course. I have not heard of anyone having heating problems putting around town. Wheareas on the track EVERYONE is getting quite hot.
I am sure the VK unit is great, but you can buy a 250cfm fan at Digikey for $38 and get 100% of the fan's effort even in slow corners. Go fast and the fan will go faster. Eyeballing the air ducting, it looks like if you used the entire front opening to send air to the oil cooler, rather than splitting it up to send a little tube towards the brakes, you would pick up some benefit. That brake duct looks too small to do much anyway. Someone with fliud analysis software could calculate this or anyone could try it which I might. I just wondered if it had been done already. |

I cut out my grills to increase the flow to the oil cooler.
honestly, I saw my oil temp go down 5-10 degrees.

I'm still surprised no one has made a stick on duct for the air dam the oil cooler gets it's air from, something you can use the bolts under the bumper to secure. I'm very sure something like that would drop temps.

the E60's Oil cooler is up front of the radiator and above the FMIC.I think this is a better location than the wheel well on the e90's. Only problem is that you can't add a better FMIC , unless you re locate it on the E60... so maybe it is not all that great.

I've seen E60 535i go limp on track, so I don't that "rail" oil cooler works that well.
My thinking is that a fan, at high road speed, would impede airflow. The air has to spin the fan, too since the fan motor isn't fast enough to allow unimpeded airflow. Think "windmill". If you're having issues with temp, don't dicker around (trust me, I've tried) and just get the VK Motorwerks oil cooler. Definitely a huuuuge difference on track. |

Here's what I did guys. Some don't like the look but I like it and it gets rid of all of the obstructions.
Yes, a rock and debris could get to the OC but it's not a direct shot so the chances of something destroying the OC is minimal. The IC on the other hand is another story. Everything that would hit that would be a direct shot.

The only reason why I can see the fan working is if you're in a lot of stop and go traffic.
IMO, the fan will hurt the air going to the OC more at high speeds than help.

The problem with adding a fan is that you will never get more airflow than the CFM rating of the fan, even when the speed of the vehicle would usually provide a higher flow.
Consider that an 18" electric radiator fan pulling 30 amps of current flows about 2300 cfm and is an impediment to flow above about 50 mph and what do you think a dinky little 6" fan is going to do to your airflow? |

The CFM of a fan is not a constant! It is directly dependent on the pressure in front of and behind it. The fan's data sheet has curves of CFM versus back pressure.
Similarly the speed of air thru the stock cooler is not 50MPH because of obstructions creating back pressure. I won't get into laminar versus turbulant airflow. Hopefully Azrielsc has some before and after temperatures he will share with us and end our speculation. |
