Wow, you guys push it a lot farther than I do! Good to hear that there seems to be the ability to go all the way to 0 if necessary.

Better question, since everyone seems to have gone past the point of no return on the fuel gauge: Has anyone ran out of gas on their E9x? How many miles past 0 did it take?

I'm curious about this reserve. I just filled up with almost exactly 1/4 tank left and it took just shy of 12 gallons, which is right on for a 16 gallon tank, which is what it's listed as. I usually fill up at 1/4 tank and it's pretty consistently around 12 gallons.

How do you "flip" it to reserve?

I agree this is a better question. I go down into single digits regularly and have seen the --- display more than a few times, but never go more than a mile or two with it. Just how far can you go until it's actually empty?

Lowest I've gone is 7mi left on display and ~ 3% left on manual gauge. I filled it to ~ 15.4 or 15.5 gallons, which means I should have ~ 5% tank left filled (16.2 gallons total, IIRC).

So it looks like my gauges guardband by ~ 0.3 gallons to bone dry.

I've gone exactly 22.4 miles after it reads -- with 4 people in the car plus luggage going to NorCal, keeping constant in the gas saving speed of exactly 65 mph on the freeway and neutral down hill.

I've gone 20-25 mi on the dashed lines. Gassed it up and only put in 15.6 gallons. Isn't our tank 16.1 Gal? Bottom line is that 0 is not empty - at least on my car

People are just trying to understand where real zero is, not so different than those of us trying to understand how fast we are going because our speedometer is also heavily guardbanded.

I went to 20 miles to empty once. Dont know about BMW but the system in an Acura is designed in such a way that you have precisely one gallon when the range goes to empty.

You can pass Exit 5 or 6, have it notify you, drive to 4, get off, look around, see nothing, get back on 89, drive to 3, repeat, drive to 2, get gas. Welcome to Vermont, please fill early, and fill often.
