Ridiculous Comment from Dealer
Greetings,
I had leased my car on 12/13/05 and it currently has 11600 miles. Since the 1 year anniversary was coming up, I decided to schedule the free yearly oil change at BMW of Fremont. When I got there at 8 AM this morning, the SA told me that he couldn't do a free oil change since my car was 2 weeks short of being one year old. According to him, I'd have to come back after the 13th. Is this really such a big deal? Anyways, even though I was pissed at that time, I didn't care much and decided to leave since I don't own the car anyways. So while I'm walking out, the SA comes to me with an estimate of $500 for dent removal. I was pretty shocked since I've really taken care of my car - it doesn't have a single scratch. I told him to show me what he was talking about. When we went out, he asked me to bend down and look at the car from different angles while the sun was reflecting on it to see the "dents". I swear there is no way on earth you could notice this until u spent 5 mins looking at the car from different angles. So I asked him how it could have happened, and he told me that "someone must have rested their hip on the car". Then he goes on to tell me that since my car has been leased, I'd have to pay for the "damages". I just couldn't believe the ridiculous comments the SA was making and I just walked away from there!!! Is it really true that I'd be charged for those minor "dents" which aren't even visible? I mean how do I know that it wasn't there from the factory. I'm sure none of you would have ever looked at your car from such different angles when you picked up your car from the dealer. My understanding is that you have to pay for scratches and dings longer than a certain length, but never heard what the SA told me. I think he was just trying to make $500 off me. |

From reading other posts on this forum, my understanding was that BMW pays for one free oil change a year during the maintenance period. I believe a lot of other members have got their free oil change before the light came on.

If you do not meet the mileage requirement (15k) for an oil change within one year the dealer shall change it per customer request at no charge. |

It's after one year, not after 50 weeks.

What really?? wait...come to think of it...I called in when my car was exactly one year old and wanted to bring it in. THey said if the light isnt on, they're not gonna change it. I vaguely recall them saying that they could do an early oil change but it would cost me. |

Yep, dealers are really strict on when to give oil change under warranty. My car has 18K and it's about 9 mos old. The service indicator says I still have 1700 miles to go. I've called East Bay BMW and Concord BMW a few days ago to have an oil change before I take a long road trip in December, but they don't want to do anything until I have less than 100 miles to go.
I'm thinking about doing DIY before the trip, but it seems kinda silly because I'm so close to get a free change. Oh well. I'll just wait I guess. |

Then no one is gonna get free oil changes every year. They set all new cars now 2 years instead of one year like it should be. Our cars won't tell us it needs oil changes until 2 years or 16,000 miles? This is unreal insane! |

Well if you think about it, the dealership has refused to do a "low mileage oil change" for a couple of members in the area already. My car is almost a year and a half old with a lil less than 14000 miles and it's about to go in for service soon. I guess 2 years is a little extreme but some dealers are really strict on the mileage thing... |

Before these newfangled sensors and improved engines the rule of thumb was to change the oil every 6 months or 6000 miles, whichever came first.

Stupid dealer...
...my dealer refused to do the change at the one year mark, because I was "close" to the 15K change (and my close, I mean 11K!) Well, its been 16 months since I got the car, with original oil. Too bad for THEM that they own the car, I dont. For a company so hell-bent on engineering, the responses from service sometimes are ridiculous. |
