Worth it to upgrade to BBS?

Currently I'm running 19" V710s on FK452s. I've been running on them for about 11k. I've just recently gotten a bend in one and I was wondering if I had had higher quality wheels, like BBS or HRE, would the bend would have been less likely? I wanted to upgrade to 19" BBS CH's but I also drive over 20000 miles a year and I don't want to spend a lot of money on new wheels if after a year they are going to be shot to shit like the ones I have. The roads here aren't great and I do my best to try and avoid stuff but as you can see it's not working out. Especially since the freeway I have to use to get from my beach-side town to anywhere, including my 80 miles round trip drive to work is always under construction and I'm always going with the flow of traffic at 80MPH +.

I really want to justify buying the BBS's over just replacing the VMR that I bent [I don't really believe in repairing wheels. I haven't had a good experience in the past with wheel repair and there is only one guy in town that does it] But if the point is moot I'll just stick with what I have.

I had 18" BBS RK's on my e36 m3 and I hit a pothole and one of the wheels cracked.

No. If the roads aren't great I don't think it matters so much which rim you use. It will still be damaged but hitting pot-holes with a low profile tire. The best thing you can do is put extra pressure in the tires to protect the rims. Otherwise change to 17" or 18" rims and keep the recommended tire pressure.

I heard BBS rims are really easy to bend, no? I agree that, no matter what you do, you cant stop damaging them if the roads are crappy

no i don't think it's worth it to upgrade to BBS wheels only because you may think that they will be stronger against potholes. As others mentioned, depending on how fast you're going and the size of the pothole, I don't think it would matter too much if you had BBS wheels or any other wheels. If you have the money to burn, get them b/c you want them in general and not just b/c of the pothole incident. That my opinion

Upgrade to BBS? Depends on the wheel...CH is a cast wheel (high quality, but still cast). Upgrading to another high strength forged wheel such as HRE, Volk, or Alloy Technic will definitely decrease the chance of having a bent wheel.

Wheel strength isn't just a marketing gimick...a high quality forged wheel will take more abuse and rough hits than a lower quality cast wheel. I can't say for sure whether a high quality wheel would have withstood the hit that bent your VMR, but there is a very good chance.

If you have the $, a set of quality 18" forged wheels (e.g., Volk) will improve performance and be more durable.

Depends.
Some of BBs wheels are way up there. So I don't know it's worth it or not (although they look great and forged).

But some aren't that expensive. Depends on what you're looking for (just look? all about lightweight? good looking strong wheels?): it maybe worth it.

Uh no.

If you want BBS wheels, buy ASAs. ASAs are manufactured under license from BBS. Same difference as between GMC and Chevy pickups and in the end you will be better off putting BMW center caps on anyways.

Forged wheels are stronger than cast.

19" are more fragile than 18 and 17s since they run less sidewall. The sidewall is a relative measure of how much impact the tire will absorb before affecting rim. Sidewall makes more of a difference in rim survival than manufacture.

If you want 19s and drive on regular roads expect to replace a rim every once in awhile.

PS. 19" rim + tire weigh more than 18s and 17s. Unsprung weight reduces acceleration, both of your car and your suspension.

PPS. Race wheels run higher aspect tires. I.E. SCCA GT must run on 15" wheels [in anticipation of all the protests from all the "racerboy experts"].

Don't be fooled. Forged wheels aren't indestructible either.

+1

I went with 18" due to the fact the roads here are horrible. I also went with Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics because they have a rim protector built into the tire. Every little thing helps.
If you're going to upgrade for strength, you should get a set of forged wheels like the Volks. They're not much more than a good quality cast wheel. I'm considering upgrading to forged 18" myself.
