Where to take old computers to get the info off of them?

THIS IS LONG

Hi, I have an old computer with a lot of things on it that I would like to retrieve.

I threw away the monitor and all the chords because they were worthless, and figured when I was ready, I could take the tower in to a store and they could do it for me.

Computer is very old, some PC that my college made us buy.

Anyway, my questions are:

1. Where or what kind of store should I take it to?
2. I'd like for them to just take the entire contents and put it on a DVD or however many they need. Probably not too many.
3. Should I have them do the entire contents or just the photos and word files, that 's all I'm really interested in.
4. If there are pictures of illegal things on there, will they snitch me out? Do they look at the photos? I mean things more illegal than underage drinking (no not child porn or anything like that!)
5. Will these files open up on a mac? All the photos are probably jpgs and the rest word documents.

And I also have a Toshiba laptop that basically the screen went blue and I got sidetracked and then got into Macs and just let it sit in the basement.

Think they can get it up and running again? Or transfer everything to a CD, or think the hard drive is fucked?

Thanks

Best Buy's geek squad can do it for you. You can also try Fry's. I would also do a search to see if there's any local, REPUTABLE store that can do it.

From what I know you can buy a little adapter at Fry's, plug the hdd in there, connect it to your computer and you should be able to read it.

Does the geek squad come to your house, I would think I need to bring the tower to them because I don't have any of the chords or monitor or anything.

I'd strongly suggest finding a friend who is PC savvy instead. Or, buy an IDE to USB adapter for the HD (I'm assuming the HD is IDE) and back it up yourself. Let me know if you need more info. Or you can send the HDD to me, and I'll happily put your stuff on DVDs and send it back, free of charge (save shipping).

Good advice, the IDE/SATA to USB adapters are quick, easy, and cheap. You can probably DIY - the most difficult part is taking the old HDD out of the old PC (which is a couple of screws at the most, some just slide out). From there, it's plugging in two cables and drag/drop to your Mac as if the HDD was a flash drive.

This one will work: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-002-_-Product

If you decide to attempt it, I can help you out with some instructions. Just PM me.
