235/40 or 245/40 on 18s
My rims are arriving tomorrow and now I need to decide on a tire. I am definitely getting the Conti DWS but I need to decide whether to get 235/40 or 245/40. The rim size is 18x8.5 et 38. I don't want to worry about rubbing and don't plan on using any spacers. I also want to be pothole resistant.

I have 235/40 Conti DWS on my 18x8.5...it's a very rounded sidewall so it runs on the smaller side...I still like the fitment though

Stock is 25.0" Diameter/4.0" Sidewall
235/40 25.4" Diameter/3.7" Sidewall 1.7% slower 245/40 25.7" Diameter/3.9" Sidewall 3.0% slower 245/35 24.8" Diameter/3.4" Sidewall 0.9% faster I wanted 245 for the extra grip and wanted 40 sidewall so I would have nearly the same amount of sidewall coverage for pothole resistance. I am afraid 3.4" sidewall will be too small for pothole safety. Since I bent 2 rims and cracked 1 rim stock this winter. |

Going to go for the 245s as the I found several pics of them on the forum and the sidewall is very round like MassBimmer said. I'll think about spacers later on.. Can anyone around here do that for me?

Town Fair is giving me that BS that they won't mount the wheels because I didn't buy them through them... Can anyone local (Milford/Framingham) actually mount the wheels if I have Town Fair put the tires on the rims.
Actually I was going to reuse my TPMS.. UGH this sucks. What should I do. I also need an alignment |

wait you mean they won't put the wheels on the car? Really? I'd just do it myself but if you looking for someone Ron's Tire in Framingham will do it. Wheel Dynamix in Natick as well, this place will swap TPMS for you and mount the tires and do a PERFECT job without damage to your wheels. May cost a little extra but, Jeff the owner is a great guy and takes this stuff very seriously.

you might want to check tirerack for the tires though. Or give Wheel Dynamix a call and see what they can do.

I'm ordering tires from Discount Tire Direct. They have great prices on the Falkens I want.
If you've got a jack and 20min, you can put them on yourself. I'd personally get a new set of TPMS so you don't have to dismount/remount tires just to swap TPMS every season. |

summer tires will not work at all in the winter regardless of size. I run a 255/45 on my M5 for the winter but they are full snow tires, Blizzak's. If you do go full summers you are going to need to swap them out in the winter.

Town Fair Tire told me the same thing so I ordered Conti DWS from tirerack, had them shipped to a local recommended shop and they installed for me. Conti DWS are perfectly capable in the winter, made it through many snow storms with them

JeffL, I would go with a summer and winter setup with that route. The runflats were slick enough in the winter, I wouldn't dare use summers. The DWS are nationally back ordered until June. So either I wait until June to get DWS, or I go all out with summers now, and buy a winter setup in the fall.
