I too looked for this info about a month ago (and couldn't find a specific filter for the E90), but after reading reviews on the K&N filters, I think I'll stay away from them for now. From what I could ascertain, the way it increases the airflow into the system is by allowing more air to pass through the filter and thus much more potentially damaging dirt/pollutants into the engine. There was a study done that compared many different brands of air filters, didn't give me any confidence at all!!

I had a K&N replacement filter fitted to my E46 320d and it ran without any problems at all.
I fitted it when the car had reached 19000 miles (first oil service). I was astounded at how dirty the OEM filter was and my dealer said that it wouldn't be replaced until 60000 miles! The engine would be starved of air by then. My neighbour has an E46 330i Clubsport and has found the same amount of dirt at 15000 miles. I don't know if it was the K&N filter or just the fact that I replaced the dirty filter, but performance did improve and my fuel consumption improved by about 10% as a result . From our experience, if you want to maintain max airflow, replace your filter more regularly than the service schedule recommends i.e. at the first oil service.

Im happy to hear this, i cant wait to get those filters for mine. It was suggested to me by a 645ci owner, having said that Im sure he knows what he is talking about just like you.

I advise against the oil wetted air filters (like K & N) for street cars. They provide less effective filtration and the oil can coat and render ineffective the MAF which is an expensive part. Such filters increase the noise level somewhat and many mistake the increased noise with increased power.

Regarding the noise - I've fitted K&N filters to all my BMWs (320 diesels, 320i and 330i) and have not detected any increase in noise. The replacement filters remain enclosed in the OEM filter /airbox housing! If you fit an induction kit then yes, the noise is increased significantly (not a good idea in my opinion). It spoils the character of the car!

The MAF problem seems do depend on the design
I personally know 5 E39 540i and M5's ( they use the same model MAF) that had to have their MAF replaced because the engines started running at half power due to contamination from K&N Filters after a few thousand miles. You can read up on the problem on www.m5board.com where there are hundreds of such cases. You have to replace it, cleaning doesnt work and a new one costs $$$$$$. But then on the E46 you never hear of such problems, so its related to the MAF design Now who is going to go and test the E90's MAF to see if it likes K&N type filters or not ??? |

__________________________________________________ __ I will not do so. I see no advantage in replacing the treated, pleated paper filter with 1940s technology on a street engine. When I first started noticing the return of oil wetted filters, the pitch from the marketers was, as I recall, that they would save money since they could be cleaned and re-oiled. More recently, the pitch is that they pass more air. |

You could be right about it affecting certain applications.
Today I managed to speak to a guy who works for the same company as me who I know fitted a replacement K&N filter to his 530i which he bought new 6 months ago. He says he's not had any problems so far but also hasn't noticed any benefits either! I presume the MAF fitted to his car will be the same as that fitted to my E46 330i which ran without problems. Clearly it pays to err on the side of caution here. Staying with OEM parts is often the safest thing to do. However MAF failures have been fairly common here in the UK with the standard OEM filter fitted particularly on diesels so I'm not sure what's going on!

I just got an e-mail directly from K&N which said they now have a drop in replacement air filter for our cars. Check out this link. http://www.knfilterchargers.com/sear...x?Prod=33-2332
