The well on alloy wheel

I have read a lot of posts about fitting regular tyres in place of runflat tyres.

Yesterday, a tyre dealer told me yesterday that although it can be done, I really would need to replace the wheels because the "well" on the alloy wheel (that is the indent near where the tyre seals against the wheel rim) is is wider than normal and designed for run-flat tyres. They are style 189 OEM wheels. Is there any truth to this or is this just a tyre guy talking rubbish?

no, it's BS. BMW wheels can fit either RFT or regular tires. Cheap try to sell you wheels, or else he's a know-nothing.

The safety humps are slightly different on wheels for RFTs, but can accommodate non-RFTs with no issues. No need to change wheels.

I've replaced my RFTs on my stock wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics - no issue whatever. RFTs were specifically designed not to require a special wheel; don't let anyone tell you different.

+1

If you do a little , there's other thread where we've pulled out disclaimer from the different RFT manufacturers mentionning that RFT have been constructed so they don't require special wheels, as the old PAX system from Michelin requested.

Yes, I have read dozens of threads and its pretty clear from those that RFT don't require a special wheel but what this guy was telling me was that there was something special about this BMW wheel (he called it the "well" and showed me the indent in the wheel near where the tyre seals against the outer side of the wheel) that meant it wasn't suitable for a non-RFT tyre.

There is definitely a lot of misinformation being spread around in relation to RFT tyres!
