Lease.. Moving to a new state?

Hey everyone, I am thinking of leasing an e90 but will probably be moving out of state before the lease is over. Is it possible to take the car to the new state? Do I have to pay tax all over again to register the car?

why not take the car to the new state and use the old plates until the lease runs out? that is what my neighbour is doing now.. he's from ontario but he goes to school here in montreal. he leased a car from ontario and brought it here... the car has been here for the last 2 years... he gets all his servicing/maintenance done here.

u only pay tax on monthly payment regardless which state you're in. You never paid tax up front, nor will you pay it again. you have to register the car in the new state, i think within 6 months or something, depending on the state

cannot do that in the US. he can get pulled over and they'll tell him to get registered, and if the're really nice they'll give him awarning. next time he's caught he's screwed

It's going to depend on what state you are moving to. Some have no tax on a monthly payment, some have a monthly tax that may vary by rate. Some have yearly property taxes that you will have to pay, and others have both. Some will give you credit or partial credit to tax paid to an other state, but most likely they will not. Some will have the leasing company pay it and you pay them back for it, others will charge you when you register the vehicle.

Let me know what state it is going to be and I'll be able to tell you the details.

When I was leasing my M3 I moved to Boston. Never registered it or changed insurance. After a little more than a year I ended up moving back to NJ anyway.

If you are moving permanently, you'll have to register it and change insurance for that state. You wont have to pay any different taxes on your payments or anything like that.

here's the "grey area"... theoretically, you can just keep registering your car in jersey, while u live here in socal... if you get pulled over or into an accident, simply, you just tell them that you are here visiting or on vacation...

i think it's worthwhile to have your car registered if you're planning on staying awhile... won't have to pay taxes, but you will have to pay registration fee... somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 - $300 for our cars... get a cali drivers license and call it a day...

My question would be to which dealer will you return the car when the lease is up. I guess you could call BMW financial services to find a dealership that is NOT a "Full Circle" dealer. Those dealers return their lease cars to BMWNA rather than keeping them and reselling. Less than 20% of BMW deales are NOT FC dealers.

All dealerships here in SoCal i've been to(Which is like 12+) will take you lease return even if it isn't leased from them.

Not completely true, in MD for example you have to pay tax on entire MSRP even if leasing, then your only have a base payment after that. But if you bring the car from other state to MD, they assume the tax was paid already, and you no longer have a tax added onto your payment. At least that's what happened to me, but I'm military and we got few perks.

I moved from Cali to Nevada recently. BMWFS actually makes it really easy. Got on owner's circle and put in my new address and they mailed a copy of the title to my new address to help me with DMV issues. Brought it in and DMV had no issues at all.

For my my sales tax is actually the same %, so my payment didn't change, but if tax here were different it would have, from what I understand.

This is usually the scenario. The tax laws that govern your "new" state take effect. Just contact BMWFS (or your leasing company if not BMWFS).

Anyone know how would you register it, since you don't get the title. Do you have to contact BMW to get some kind of letter or something?
