Custom Subwoofer Install
Ever since I picked up the 328, I have been dreaming of ways to make a complete stealth sub install using the "spare tire" box. Does anyone have a custom sub install in the E90? Has anyone used that box as a base? I would love to see pics for ideas.
A problem I am forseeing is that without rear-folding seats there is very little air movement between the trunk and the cabin. Has anyone done anything to fix this? I am thinking about creating a port behind the armrest, but would be very interested in hearing any other possibilities before I cut up the back of my car. Cheers! |

I think the spare tire box would be a good candidate for either an 8 or 10" sub. The next issue is to create a pass through on the trunk liner and implement some kind of grill so that you still retain full use of the trunk. I am waiting on this move though...I have been chatting with the guys at bavarian soundwerks and they are supposedly designing a box for the e90 which will hopefuly use the spare tire box.

have you thought of using those shallow subs? and put them in place of the stock subs underneath the seats?

I was in the same boat as you guys until I heard of Reus Systems in Orange, CA. They have a complete stealth system for BMW's. Well I went to check them out and their system is awesome. Once I heard it I got it. Great thing about their systems are that they come with a lifetime warranty. When my friends got in the car and I turned the system on they didn't even know where the speakers were. I suggest that you check them out. www.reusaudio.com Ask for Rick.

I have no affiliation with them whatsoever and second, this is not spam. Pictures will not show you anything since it is all stealth. By the way, you can go onto any forum board whether its M5Board, Merecedes Benz, Lamborghini, Porsche, and all will tell you that have their system how good it is. You do not have to take my word for it.

Oh this is getting funny now! The subs under the seats are TINY. I havent been able to take a good look at them yet, but from the space available under the seat and size of the grill and the LACK of bass in the E90, its probably a dedicated midrange driver 4-6 inches. Replacing them is a possibility. Besides all of the work to take out the seats, there is not that much room to push air and you will suffer from a lack of significant bottom end.

JL might launch a shallow line soon, but it's going to be 12" and above it seems Pioneer has a few shallow 8" as well, but i'm not sure they can beat well. Other than that, I'm still waiting for a sq brand to launch a shallow sub. Really dont like the idea of a sub-box sitting in my trunk. Maybe a seat mount to give the rear passengers a good massage? |

I have read about the shallow mounts and they look promissing, but I am not sure about the amount of volume the undermount subs in the e90 have to move air. A well placed sub in the trunk with some kind of pass through to the cabin will provide the bump and bottom end that those will not be able to push because of lack of air.
I am making another post as I got a response from MTX on the thunderform enclosure. They want people to email them so they can gauge interest. Please let them know! |

Are the underseat subs you speak of for the stock audio, or Logic 7? I dont see why replacing those with Pioneer or JL audio shallow mounts would be a bad idea. The bass will not be the same as it would be in an enclosure mounted in the trunk, but it would make use of the design that is already built in the car.

They are both 8" iirc, except for the basic 6 speaker system (which did not come to america). Judging by their size, they might be able to play 50-2000hz. I'm not too sure of the specs yet. This will compliment the smaller door speakers to provide more midbass hopefully. Imaging would be a bish though ( I want a full oem look, no modified kickpanels). Dont quote me on anything, I havent even ordered my car yet. |

If you have second thoughts about putting a box in the trunk, do you mean having a Qlogic type box floating around in the trunk? I dont want to do that either. The new 3 has storage box in the trunk which is more than adequate for a stealth sub installation. What is the abreviation you keep putting next to the speaker size: iirc?

nice setup.
Is that thing in his coin box the sub level control? Does it mean he controls the volume just like how he normally does? Any reason why he opted for the audiocontrol instead of the JL cleansweep? JL recommends using their own volume knob with the cleansweep. It does a pretty cool job of auto calibrating the eq though. But using their remote would be a pita. |
