There is no A5 3.2 anymore. The S5 goes against 335is and they have nothing to compete with 335i or 335d

they don't sell 3.2 audis anymore except in the A6 and the SUVs. You can only get an a3/a4/a5 2.0. An S5 fits between the 335is and the M3... right where it's priced.

S5 is 335's competition while RS5 is M3's competition.

I believe we are classified as in Sports Compact Sedan category.

an acura tl is a sporty sedan. I sure hope the 3 series is a sports sedan. It's number one advantage is that its sportier than everything else in its segment.

The 3.2 has been removed. It hardly offered better performance at the cost of more weight over the 2.0T. A5 2.0T = 328i (A5's 211 bhp/258 lb-ft VS 328i's 230 bhp/200 lb-ft) S5 = 335i/is (S5's 354 bhp/325 lb-ft VS 335i[is]'s 300[322] bhp /300[332] lb-ft) RS5 = M3 (RS5's 450 bhp/317 lb-ft VS M3's 414 bhp/295 lb-ft) The Audi typically costs more and is slightly heavier, yet more powerful, than its direct BMW competitor, but the trim levels line up. The S5 is basically an A5 in S-Line trim with a bigger engine. The suspension parts are the same, but with different tuning. The distinction its badging creates is purely a marketing thing, although it could be attributed to company history. The RS5 and M3 are entirely different from the more plebeian models in that the majority of their body panels, underpinnings and drivetrain are extensively modified.

The badging is actually a big draw. There's a lot of people who don't like the idea of spending 50+k on a "3 series bmw" that is indistinguishable from a 38k variant to the common observer... throw an "s" badge on it... now the driver feels like he's bought something special. It's probably the biggest reason behind ditching the v8 in the a6. When the S6 comes out, I guarantee you people who would buy a 550 will defect to the S6 just to distinguish their 70-75k cars from lower variants.

BMW needs a much stronger form of nomenclature for their cars, but they need to stay within traditional naming methods. Tagging 'is' to the back of their cars really feels like a cop out, we-need-to-boost-this-model-year's-production-numbers kind of move. The s/xDrive badging is too cluttered to have lasting power, too.

Agreed. The "is" is a similar concept... but it's just not different enough. Perhaps a decade worth of great "is" cars will make it different one day, but as it stands, the is and the i aren't remotely different enough to make any kind of difference.

Haven't driven an S5, but have driven a B7 S4 and I felt the exact same way. I love the looks of the S5, but when it comes down to sheer driving, I'll gladly take my E92 any day .

IMO The rumble of the V8 (my last car was B7 S4) is FAR more appealing than the sound of my 335. Sounds like an old inboard boat until you wind it up. I wish I had gone for the S5. |

i have a friend who drove my 335i and my other friend's S5 (both are stock). after driving both, he said that he preferred the 335i as it was faster in his opinion - even though the S5 has higher specs than the 335i. BMW ftw

Funny. Just goes to show what opinion is worth. 335 may have felt faster because it makes more torque lower in the rev range but I think they are virtually identical 0-60. Absolutely identical on a track. 335xi would get waxed on a track but probably quicker to 60. This thread is 100% subjective.
