The angled cable I talked about in this post works great (for me).

My friend... never assume that! My RAZR (which where i got the adaptor from) is a POS.

It's extremely frustrating why the BMW USB is so weak.

What HDD are you using? I'm using an Iomega.

what iomega drive are u using? is it a 5400rpm one?

No, it's a 4200RPM 100GB drive, model number 33224.

(Opps, sorry, thought you were asking me)

any1 got one?

a few questions for guys who are using hard disks with 6fl now tho.

does it continue from where u left off like the ipod wud?

is there a big delay in music to start playing? ie. say u had been playing a cd in the car when u switched the car off, when u turn the car on again it plays the cd almost instantaneously!

cheers again!

When you start the car again, there's about a 20 second wait but it starts where you left off. When you first put the disk in and it needs to index, it takes a couple of minutes before it can play, and it continues to index in the background.

Yes, longer delay, by a second i think. i'm thinking about forking up the money to get an ipod. it so slow to change tracks.

hmm. if theres a delay changing tracks that cud get frustrating. but is an ipod going to be faster in comparison? i mean generally if the ipod performs better i think i will have to get the ipod even tho a high capacity ipod aint cheap and even then i still cant have my whole library in the car

There is a delay between 1-2 seconds between tracks, but I don't think it's a big deal. I'm quite happy with the setup.

I agree, there's a slight delay between tracks but honestly not any more noticeable compared to an ipod (nano). The only real difference I found is the 20 sec delay to start playing when you start the car but if you unlock the doors with the fob (i have CA) before you get in it starts the disk spinning up and by the time I have it in gear the musics playing.

edit- I'm one of the few that a 5400 rpm disk worked for (WD passport) - perhaps that makes a difference in less track delay, - the drives buffer size might come in to play as well.

USB / iPod integration. You can plug in a USB key, 4200RPM hard disk, or an iPod. A good option. Do a search on this site.

For Minnesota owners (or others in the Upper Midwest), may be a no go?

I ordered 6FL on my '08 335i and was quite encouraged when I saw this thread. However, after reading the operating specs of the WD drive, I'm thinking a hard drive isn't an option for us. What I'm seeing is an operating low temperature of ~40F and a non-operating temp of ~-4F. It's frequently much colder than that here, so I think for the northern climes, we're back to looking at a USB flash drive--right?

I hope this is in the DIY on the main page, maybe edited so it's all in the first post.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

I can't believe so many people are having trouble getting this to work. My 5400rpm WD Passport works like a charm and love it. Only complaints is how slow it is to scroll through different artists.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, a flash drive would be OK of course but consider that the IPOD specs are worse than at least the WD drives and that there are probably a lot of people leaving IPOD's in cars in both summer and winter without any problems.

Some people are just getting lucky. It's not like the ones that can't get it to work are doing anything wrong... it's either that the USB port in our car does not provide as much power, or there are differences in some of the WD Passport drives.

My 4200rpm USB drive works great though, so I'm happy! The scrolling speed is supposedly much improved in the latest progman software, btw.

Those with working WD drives should report the size. I wonder if the older smaller drives work better...?
