My car is currently still at dealership. They are now saying that after a lot of testing one of the replacement vanos units was bad. Ordered another replacement for the exhaust side and are now installing it on the motor. I will post more when I know more. I don't know that this looks good considering how many of these they are going to be doing.

No cost; everything looks good
Picked my car up today. I have new vanos units and car is running very well. SA said no need to baby the car. Just drive it and have fun. Pull feels great. I am glad to have this done. I plan to put some miles on her this weekend to make sure all is well.

I heard a whistle and had a rough idle after driving on fwy about a month ago. Bmw said they didn't notice and gave me car back after $150 analysis. I asked them about vanos recall I got mailed to me. They said they didn't have the parts. I brought it in a few days ago while the whistle and rough idle was happening realtime.
They assumed it was valve cover so they planned to fix it saying they would help us out and do it for cheap. When they took cover off they noticed a crack in the Vanos and they replaced it also. They showed that they took off 95% of charges plus the recall for free and we paid $250 total. Not sure how all of a sudden they got the parts for the Vanos... Did driving with a bad Vanos for a month possibly cause valve cover issue? Do you think other problems may occur after that? Lastly did I get robbed out of $250? My 2011 328i has 60k on it. Sorry about possibly breaking any forum codes I'm a newbie... Last edited by wjackson1870; 08-02-2014 at 05:53 PM.. |

My car had 65k miles so I asked my SA what they would charge for a new set of plugs while they were in there and he said $200 parts and labor so I had new plugs installed. I don't think that normally they would do anything with the plugs when replacing vanos.

I think they estimate time and labor charge based as a separate job. When I went for the recall, my cabin air filter was due for replacement as per their records but I would have to come back another time for it. Don't you have to remove the cowl where the cabin air filter is located to get to the VANOS !!. |

Atleast you received the first letter. I haven't received anything or been given any type of notice and my build date is 4/2010. I have 45k on my car and i feel like the bolts are a ticking time bomb. Also, BMW NA's recall information on the bmwusa webpage has been down for quite some time.

Think they'll give me a problem if I take the car in for this with the JB4 installed? I just really don't feel like taking it off again.

I've been debating on that too. I don't think they can say anything about the JB4 but I think I'll take mine off mainly because I don't want the dealer disonnecting the jb4 and reconnecting it wrong or only connecting it to some of the sensors...

Symptoms of bolt failure? I was going WOT then heard a metallic clanking noise all while the car stumbled and choked for a brief second. But the car drive fine right afterwards.

Alright I was able to make a service appointment at the dealer for the vanos recall even though I didn't get a letter! I knew my car was affected by checking the database with the link above and my dealer accomodated me. I confirmed that they had the parts in stock too. What a relief...

Called my dealership in NJ a couple days ago. They told me they didn't think they were going to get the parts for this until October - OCTOBER?! Why the f even tell me about the recall if your not going to do anything about it until like 6 months later??

hey all,
Im based in the UK and have a Oct 2010 build E92 335. Looks like the VANOS issue has hit us here an my car is going in for it to be fixed in about 10 days. I remember clearly when I first bought the car, Jan 12 (9k miles) that it stalled once. Thought it was weird and did nothing about it. It stalled the other day again (now 17k miles) but restarted and was fine. Both times the stall was while at the lights or intersection. no engine light or limp mode either time. Nothing unusual with the car other than that. (oh except for the dealer who sold it to me lying about no damage, bumper had to be resprayed the other day and the body shop said it was done once before) Hope it all gets fixed up fine and dandy. BMW is cover the work obviously. Cheers |

I have received the first letter. I sent a copy to my SA and have periodically checked in with her but (1) no replacement bolts yet and (2) no ETA as to when they will get them. Frankly, they seem somewhat clueless about the issue.
