I can't speak for BMW, but I have experience working for another major OEM, and there is always a significant number of cars - hundreds - produced for testing/evaluation/demo/press purposes before sales to end customers start. On a new platform the number would be higher than usual.

It would be very expensive and impractical to hand build all these, so from a manufacturing point of view they are "mass produced", and mostly identical to the product that will be sold to end customers. Some of these cars will end up, refurbished, on the used market.

OK, good to know. Thanks for the info.

Actually, we don't have to go far to find more examples. BMW itself does it regularly. BMW Motorrad, that is. I can't say much about historical tradition, but recently every new bike they made went into production about a month or two before its official introduction.

But bikes are easier to store away from prying eyes I guess?

Part of these early units usually are also to test production itself. In my industry, we receive these final samples for us to sign off as acceptable and ready for mass production. Our factory needs this approval by leadership before they ramp up to full speed.

If the X3 M has the same power train as the iX3 M60, what would differentiate the full fat M model?

Does this tell us anything about the M3 being quad or dual motor given the M3 and X3 M typically share a power train?

I think this will be similar to Tesla LR AWD vs Performance models.

No.

Another wrinkle here is that there will be more than one version of X3M. Maybe that second one will have a radically different setup. Or maybe it won't.

Maybe that’s how this squares the circle with the rumors of both 700 and 850 hp for the M3. You have a dual motor one with the M60 drivetrain but M suspension, wheels, brakes, seats and wider track “base” version and then a quad motor “Competition” model of both M3 and X3 M.

We're both guessing here but this would make a lot of sense.

Plenty of people will be happy with EV M-lite power as long as their car has all other attributes of a proper M model. Besides, I'm pretty sure triple- or quad-motor will incur a heavy range penalty if the battery remains the same.

That is the regular schedule: Reveal/presentation in mid-may, start of production in July and market introduction/deliveries of HEA in November.

What's exceptional here is that BMW has not revealed the final car but still started production, albeit apparently not of cars designated to be sold.

ynguldyn I am curious about this new 'Chassis Control' option that BMW is planning to rollout with the 5 series. Is it similar to the trick dampers that Porsche and Ferrari have been using that eliminates the need for anti-roll bars?

Individual Colors are not available anymore with the X4 M Competition. Just a few standard colors are available.

I mentioned a few times that my time horizon is at most 3 years. G74 is outside that horizon or it doesn't exist.

So seems like next gen X5 G65 will keep the entry level rear wheel drive configuration and that's amazing...if faster than the older model, like usual with their l6, we should expect 0-60 in about 4.2-4.3 and 1/4 mile in 12.8-12.9 @ 105-106 mph...crazy numbers for an "entry-level".
I guess the output should be the current 398hp output of the 2025 X3 M50i.

BMW so far hasn't changed the technical platform in LCIs I think, so it is very unlikely they will do it now. What I believe is on the table is the panoramic vision interior cockpit.
