A roll is just that...the car is rolling before you accelerate, opposed to a "dig" (standing start). You're not really going 0MPH, but you are going pretty slow. Then you just gun it, so no launching involved.

so ur clutch is already engaged and ur going like 5 mph kinda thing?
or do u let it roll at like 5/10, then you engage the 1st gear but dumping/feathering of clutch?

Yeah, clutch is already engaged. Same thing as 5-60 (more accurate imo).

does anyone have problems with the car sometimes shaking or 'wobbling' (hard to explain) when in first gear, especially if/when you're moving in first or second and you let off the gas a bit? the engine is still running at around 1000rpm, so it shouldn't be lugging just yet.

this thread should be unstickied or moved or something. seems like noone ever pays any attention to it since it's never bolded.

no one pays attention to it? lol, Q's and A's are posted daily on here.

what you described sounds normal in any manual car, is it your first manual? might be more noticeable in cars with stronger engines than ones with small ones though. and it also might be caused by CDV, but that's just a guess

ruxp is feeling the relatively harsh effect of engine braking in 1st gear. If you suddenly let off the gas in 1st gear, there will be a bit of lurching by the car and the passengers. Obviously, the effect of engine braking is much more noticeable in 1st than any other gear because of the gear ratio.

i was taught by a friend of mine that when ur in a situation like that, like say ur in LA traffic or any ridiculous traffic you gotta push the throttle very lightly and take ur foot off very lightly to avoid that jerking motion, it hurts ur car in the long run

Yup, it's my first manual. I pretty much taught myself on it. Was rough the first couple days, pretty smooth sailing after that except for a few idiosyncrasies here & there that I'm adjusting to (like the one described here)

I'm removing my CDV soon, just haven't gotten around to it.. I have the modded one from Zeckhausen racing already. Need to take it to someplace thatll do it for me.

Here's another question (I know, I have a lot) -

When I shift from first to second, the car slows down considerably since I'm only in 1st and am taking my foot off the gas.. is there any way around this besides just shifting quicker?

Clutch in before you lift gas. 100x smoother and quicker that way.

Unless you're going uphill, there should not be a considerable change in speed....maybe you're depressing the brake pedal instead of the clutch?...

It's not that it changes speed so much as it stops accelerating, I guess.. and in first gear, when you're taking off & supposed to be accelerating, that's not a good thing

shim: thanks, I'll give that a shot

ruxp - is this your first manual?
the reason why i am asking is what you are describing sounds very normal to me, so i am wondering if you are experiencing this ONLY in this car vs. other 6mt's you have driven or if this is your first extensive 6mt experience

This technically isn't my first manual, as I bought a '96 Ford Escort 5 speed once on a lark a couple years ago (it was only $800 or so).. but I only drove it like twice before I moved and got rid of it, and I was an extreme noob with it. I've driven a couple other manual cars as well here & there.

But yeah, this is the first manual I'm driving extensively. I appreciate all the tips & help in this thread. It only took me a couple days to get comfortable with it, but since then I've gotten exponentially better still.

Another NOOB question

Every time i WOT, the shift from 1st to 2nd is really long. Like i have to hit the clutch, change to second, wait like half a second for the RPMs to drop, then let off the clutch so it would be smooth. Is there any other way to do it smooth and fast? I tried once but i think i let off too quickly and the wheels chirped lol

u shouldnt have to wait for RPM's to drop, you should keep going. but then sounds like ur ditching the clutch at engagement point too quick

yah it's not that good, there's a balance between using too much clutch, and making the car jerk. u just gotta use the clutch a little bit more to smooth out that shift. that's all
