I think it's the water pump ground. Those are problematic on N55 engines:

BTW, where did you get the guard for $20? I see them going for around $50.
I have a fleet that needs them!

Now that the larger items have been sorted, I bought a new set of jack pads. Yes, I can tell how impressed and jealous you all are...

Sucks that it happened, but good thing you had the seal guard in place! I don't think it's very common, most of the belt failures are all associated with oil leaks or a seized pulley (compressor mostly.) I wasn't worried about it at all when I got my 335 however I had the car apart to replace a radiator and decided that while I had very easy access I should go ahead and install the seal guard - cheap insurance, proven by your situation.

I bought mine from Uncle Bezos for around $50 but only because I was in the middle of a job and wanted next day convenience. Mine looked identical to the $20-30 ones from Aliexpress too, even had the same text.

I've opened 4 tab from a google search '' n54 belt shred''

and some items come out :

- OFGH leak
- weak tensioner
- broken or chipped power steering wheel.
- a spec in any of the pulley tooths
- sized a/c comp, alternator of power steering pump
- loose power steering pump and the belt rub on the sway bar.

Today I was trying to order new emblem for e91 rear (51147166076). And? They discontinued them

There isn't any available on stock on whole Europe. What a shame.

Yep all possible! Ive seen belts shredded from a couple in your list. Especially N54, power steering pulley can hit the subframe and crack. They make aluminum replacements because of this

Just curious, I've seen this as a trick but concerned about the fact you are supposed to replace them if you loosen or remove them (control arm related hardware).

I am going to try and replace the cat integrated headers while I'm doing the OPG as well, along with motor mounts. Something has been wrong with bank 2 header for a while now. Would love to finally fix it.
Oil pan is back on and torqued down!

The trick I really needed was to unbolt the heater hose that's bolted to the top of the front of the subframe (2 T30 Torx on my manual car).

I did not end up loosening the control arms, but I'd say it's not a bad idea. It's tight in there, and any room you can gain helps a lot. I scratched up the pan a bit upon removal, and trying to reinstall without molesting the gasket is stressful no matter how you slice it.

A couple "optionals" I saw mentioned in the DIY's were the oil level sensor gasket, and the oil pickup tube gasket, so I had those gaskets on hand.

The oil level sensor gasket was a piece of cake, and I definitely recommend that while the pan is off. The 3 bolts have a super low torque spec but they are steel going into steel, so I reused them.

The oil tube pickup gasket, I'm not sure I would recommend. The 3 bolts holding it on are one-time-use TTY, and only sold as part of the "oil pump bolt kit" 11410426472. Obviously, I realized that as soon as I had removed them. The pickup tube was still very securely in place, and it took a lot of wiggling to get it loose, so I'm inclined to think the gasket was fine.

After making very little mess so far, this was also the point of the job where I finally dumped oil all over my garage floor when the tube came out. So between making a giant mess, having to order new parts (including a bunch of bolts I don't need), and observing that the pickup tube gasket seemed OK; I'm not sure I recommend it. Hindsight is 20/20 though, and I wouldn't have known how the seal was until I took those bolts off.

Hoping the worst is behind me, and that I didn't miss torqueing any of those 28 bolts (pretty sure I didn't, but what a pain!).

A little more cleaning, then on to motor mounts and bolting everything back together.

Oil pan gasket and new engine mounts are done, woohoo!

CDV delete also done, which threw me on a couple hour detour as I learned how to bleed the clutch system properly. TL;DR: the brake fluid reservoir needs to be fully topped off to max or the clutch circuit doesn't receive fluid.

Next stop: Rogue transmission mounts, transmission fluid flush w/ Redline MTF, OEM short shifter + fresh bushings/bearings.

Took the car in for the dreaded oil pan gasket repair, main seal repair and new drive belts and pulleys. I replaced the valve cover gasket myself the prior week. Feels good to have no oil leaks.

Congrats! Hoping I am in the same boat, finally.

I can officially vouch that paying someone else to do the OPG is not a bad use of money.
