Just my understanding from what I've seen, only people who haven't received the software upgrade will receive a letter. I think in the ABC interview, the guy said the recall has been in process. The process is to get the software upgrade then the pump if things fail again. Just an opinion...that's all. If I am wrong, please correct......

Recall info found in November Service Roundtable
I found the following information about the "Voluntary Recall" in the attached slides in the November Service Roundtable. B061110
I don't know why the bulletins have not been released/updated. The reconstructed bulletins below were done with serious eye strain as the images in the slides were created with low resolution. I think I have most of the info correct, but it is possible things like the dates are not as they were almost impossible to see clearly. It looks like some of us are closer to receiving our letter. Product Quality Update • All with N54 engine produced 06/2006 up to 03/2010 • Emissions Recall 10E-A02: N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump • Approximately 141,000 vehicles are affected • Depending on vehicle’s production date Recall will consist of: 1. DME Programming (126,000 vehicles), or 2. Low pressure sensor / HDP inspection and replacement (38,000 vehicles) 3. Or both operations (19,000 vehicles) • Check fault memory • If LP sensor faults (e.g. 29F3, 2A2D, etc) are stored, then replace the sensor • If LP faults are not stored, perform ISTA EKP activation and observe the low pressure value • In case pressure exceeds 6.7 bar, replace LP sensor • Check HDP part number installed in the vehicle • If the P/N is 13 51 7 613 933 (currently available), do not replace it • Otherwise replace HDP with P/N 13 51 7 616 446 • Recall Campaign planned release with customer notification • End of November 2010 • SI B13 09 10, and • SI B13 13 10 SI B13 09 10 Fuel Systems November 2010 Technical Service This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B13 09 10 dated October 2010. PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY. designates changes to this revision SUBJECT Voluntary Emissions Recall Campaign 10E-A02: N54 High-Pressure Fuel Pump: Program Control units MODEL E60, E61, E71, E82, E88, E90, E92, E93, F01, F02 with the N54 engine produced from 02/06/06 to 03/26/10 SITUATION The customer may complain of extended engine cranking time before the start. Also, fault code 2FBF (Fuel pressure on – release injection, pressure too low) may be stored in the DME. CORRECTION The new DME calibration improves the engine starting strategy and the robustness of the HDP high-pressure pump. Copy of the customer notification letter is attached. AFFECTED VEHICLES This Service Action involves E60, E61, E71, E82, E88, E90, E92, E93, and F01, F02 vehicles with the N54 engine which were produced from 02/06/2006 to 03/26/2010. In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Emissions Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Recall Campaign, first check whether the Recall Completion Label, 50 92-406, is attached to the right (passenger) rear side of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield. If the label is found, the Campaign has already been performed. If the Recall Campaign Label is not present, it will be necessary to utilize the “Service Menu” of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action. PROCEDURE Program/recode the vehicle using the current ISTA/P version (2.37.2 or later). The target integration levels should be: E8x/E9x – Integration level (new): E89X-10-03-504 or higher E71 – Integration level (new): E070-10-03-502 or higher E6x – Integration level (new): E060-10-03-501 or higher F01, F02 – Integration level (new): F010-10-03-504 or higher NOTE: This is not the full TSB!!! Should the situation occur, the engine emergency operation (Safe Mode) is activated and the Service Engine Soon lamp (ML??) is illuminated. Note: In this situation, the vehicle can continue to be driven, even for long distances, without the risk of a breakdown. The low pressure fuel sensor may deteriorate prematurely due to internal leakage. The Service Engine Soon lamp (ML?) may be illuminated with the appropriate fault code in the DME fault memory. Copy of the customer notification letter is attached. AFFECTED VEHICLES The Emissions Recall Campaign involves E60,E61,E71,E82,E88,E89,E90,E92 and E93 vehicles with N54 engines which were produced from 06/06/2006 through 10/20/2009 In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had the Emissions Recall Campaign completed or is affected by the Recall Campaign, first check whether the Recall Completion Label 50 92 406 is attached to the right (passenger) rear ??? of the hood in the engine compartment, close to the windshield. This worked. I went to my dealer and spoke to my service manager and mentioned about the recall on the HPFP and he acknolwedged it. I told him what do I have to do and what will it cost me, he said nothing. I have an appoinment to leave my car with them so they can change it for a new HPFP. The last time it was changed was in 2007 the same year the car was orginal bought. So indeed getting a new one is the best move.

13 13 10 has been released with an attached customer letter. Looks like if you don't have the 933 pump you can get it replaced and if you don't have ISTA/P version 2.40.0 or later you can get it as well. You may also have the low pressure fuel sensor replaced if it does not pass their test. http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B130910g.htm http://www.bmwtis.com/tsb/bulletins/...p/B131310g.htm |

SIB 13 13 10 states that if the HPFP was not replaced previously with the 933 pump, then fuel pump #13 51 7 616 446 should be installed. Have any of these failed?

There is no secret to this; they just need to go in and update all the fuel line components at one time instead of waiting for the domino effect. Like someone wrote earlier in the forum; most people will have moved into another car by the time they fix this. The 2007 guys are probably looking for the "latest and greatest" by now. |

My car is in the shop right now getting the recall work done. They had to pull the injectors to check which part number is on them along with checking the fuel pump part. I have never had mine repalced so I am thinking I will probably get the new part number 446 pump. I will be picking it up tomorrow. I will post after i get it back.

pump and the car passed all computer checks and 20 mile test drive.. I told my SA about the revised bulletin regarding the 446 pump replacement.. He seemed oblivious to it and informed me that he woulod get back to me.. I recieved a voice mail from him this evening informing me that he ran a DCS with my vin and that my car is a part of the new campaign involving the new 446 pump.. The 446 pump is not in stock right now at the dealer.. I do have a 328 xdrive loaner that I've been pushing since Monday. Should I go ahead and have them make the switch from the just installed 933 to the 446? How long has this 446 pump been available?

I will await the phone call from my SA this morning to see what he has to say regarding the already installed 933 & this "not in stock" 446 pump. If they are the same I should leave well enough alone. Have a happy holiday guys..

Just got a call from my SA. He said that they will follow the campaign, remove the 933 pump & install the 446. The car will be tested once again including a cold start. He wants to assure that everything works with the car & so do I.

After reading all of these I comments, I decided to call the main BMW dealership in my state. It was like night and day talking to them. They didn't need a letter. The told me the car was definitely slated for a new fuel pump and injectors. These boys spoke confidently and explained the process without issue. I also brought up a comment about having Dinan software and the guy said. Anyone who has Dinan will get it reloaded without issue. Then he scheduled me a car. NOW...that's what I like to hear. Some of you guys are so lucky to have a dealership like that in your local area.

HPFP Ethanol link?!!?? Automakers suing to stop Ethanol fuel addons.
I own an '07 335i and am dreading the HPFP failure. Currently on 16K miles w/ no HPFP failure. (Knock on wood)
From what I've read some N55s also seem to be creeping up w/ similar HPFP failures. I came across this article which adds to the current speculation that Ethanol may be a culprit behind these infamous HPFP failures. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/201...thanol-blends/ "According to a press release The petition challenges the ability of EPA to grant a partial waiver for three specific reasons. * The Clean Air Act does not authorize EPA to issue any “partial waiver” decisions, * EPA’s own statute passed by Congress in 2007 states that fuels can’t be approved for the market that could cause any failures. Yet, E-15 has been shown to adversely affect engines in non-road products and later model year vehicles, cause emission failures and increase air pollution due to misfueling. Further, administrative records fail to demonstrate that even new model year motor vehicles (other than “flexible fuel vehicles”) would not be damaged and result in failures when run on E-15, and * The testing, upon which EPA made its decision, was put in the administrative record too late to permit meaningful comment or scrutiny from concerned groups and stakeholders. TrackRat How did you find out that the 446 is a new 933? I am not trying to say it is wrong or iinfer anything negative. I am going to pick up my car later today after the recall work and would like to go in knowing as much as I can about the pumps, just in case.
