General rule of thumb for the e36....if you don't pay $10k for it then you'll most likely end up paying to get it up to there and possibly more. It's just a general rule and not for every single e36 out there. I searched for 2 years and unless you want to take risk and do ALL the work yourself, then the rule sticks pretty well.

that said, his maintenance could be better--by now, just by age, he should have changed the radiator, water pump, and belts/hoses. not sure he did any of this. but what an amazing choice! |

oh definitely i'm the same way. it's really hard to justify especially when you can get an e46 m3 for that price in pretty good condition too, but to each their own. just beware...it will take a considerable amount of time to find the right one or at least it did for me. i just got lucky with the bright color

The M cars they sell are the cream of the crop. Mint condition as possible with no mechanical or vehicle history problems. It definitely is better but how much is up to the buyer.

When I said similar, I meant BMW I6, the S54 is not so different from the S52 until you get past 4k rpms.
I would only have an S54 car if it spent some time with MaxPsi and came home with their turbo kit. Speaking to Mike, the dream would be an E46 6mt wagon done up as an M3(fender flares and all) with a turbo'd S54. Now THAT is yummy.

Might as well bump this thread. I went to the track with my E92 M3 the other month and was hooked. However, I realized that the car is just way too much for a beginner like me, not to mention the cost of tracking that thing was just too high.
So I began looking for a higher mileage E46 M3 or a nice E36 M3. E36 won because it was more different to my E92 than the E46 is. Not to mention the cost of running is much cheaper too. So I'd like to introduce my 99 Techno Violet coupe. Tons of mods already done (brakes, suspension, bushings) and the cooling system has also been taken care of. I do need to do a few cosmetic things to it but otherwise, she's in great shape. The shifter is too sloppy though, have to fix that. And I just couldn't resist getting these locally. 3 days into the ownership and already there are parts coming in Let's turn this into the E36 M3 owner's thread! I'd love to see what some of you guys have. I just cannot stop driving this thing, it's so much fun.

Awesome!! great choice, it really is a super fun car to drive. Feel free to PM with questions. At this point I've owned mine for 5 years and have pretty much pulled every bolt on the car.
