how do you view this in comparison to the release of Ronnie Biggs, also on compassionate grounds (if I'm not mistaken)?

In my view its a shocking disgrace, and not done in my name thats for sure. I have friends who lived in Lockerbie at the time and whilst none of them where hurt the impact was devastaing.

As a +convicted+ murderer the +only+ way out for this guy should have been at appeal.

But they pretty much knew he was not guilty.
They weighed up the disgrace of letting him go on compassionate grounds vs worngly imprisoning him.
The former won.
