I picked up my E90 three weeks ago and received 2005.2 as my DVD.
Since my dad already had his DVD stolen in his car a couple of years back and had to replace it at greater than $200, i immediately burned two extra copies and have the original for safe keeping (stolen by a valet somewhere in LA). My burned copy has been working fine and i felt i would be able to trade the original in for an update if i could find out that one existed. However, it seems that nobody here has a 2006 version yet. . . but I would love to get the most recent version. I was mighty surprised to see the disk was single layered though - i just sort of thought they would need more than 4.7 gb for all the data. |

I also got my car three weeks ago and it has 2005.2. I asked my CA if this was the latest version, since it was dated 2005, and he said this was the latest version released by BMWNA. He didn't know when the next release was due.
BTW I also made a backup copy, and use it, with no problems. Last edited by 330eye; 03-23-2006 at 07:40 AM.. |

True. BMW could press charges for copyright infringement in that case. But it still would not have any affect on your warranty of your car.

Talked to my dealer today and he said that I would need to order it from http://www.navteq.com/ So I called them any they said it was $199.00 + S&H (version 2006.2) I might be inclined next week to order it, would rather find a torrent for it but hey guess you have to do the legal way for somethings.

I called the dealer who didn't even bother to return my call. BMW NA customer service said "call Navteq". Navteq said $250, please. If you can do better, you're better at whining than I was. |

Just for fun, I burned it using Nero 6 to both DVD+R and DVD-R blanks (I used high quality Maxell blanks). Both worked perfectly. US copyright law specifically allows this type of use, and I believe everyone should do it, esp. those with CIP 20.x or later or whose cars were produced post-9/05. In those cars, the DVD slot can play MP3/WMA DVDs, giving you the equivalent of a 4GB iPod Nano on a single DVD. I've even been able to play MP3s burned onto a DVD-RW disc. When you are swapping the discs in and out, you can scratch them. So making a copy of the $250 nav original makes a lot of sense. |

I've wondered why BMW even uses DVD for the database. It has too many moving parts, the discs (or is it disks?) get scratched, the discs get stolen, etc. They should ditch the DVD altogether, put a solid-state chip like a CompactFlash card in and have downloads sold from the dealer -- at a reasonable cost.
One thing I'd like to see on my Nav system is a learning mode. Then when I drive where the map says there aren't any roads I can update that. But then, the system would cost more. Six of one, half dozen of the other. |

It is only one DVD. That's all I have in my car to find any place and street in North America.

thanks for the response and clarification.
i called navteq (18886286277), they said that all cars with manufacture date of april and later should come with the new DVD (2006.2), the guy said if it comes with the old one then take it up with the dealer (yeah right, good luck with that!).

I'm picking my new E90 in June for PCD. So i assume I will get the current disk. Since I am not picking up at my dealer, will the BMW PC put the nav DVD in the car or do I have to wait until I get it back to my dealer?
