I will say when I dropped my car off originally the dealer called me and said they could not duplicate the noise. I was afraid of that, considering the squeal was only intermitent and only occurred under certain conditions. I knew it made the noise at start up with the AC button depressed every late afternoon after my car had been sitting out in the hot sun all day, so I went up to the dealer the same day about right around the same time it always happens and asked the CA to take me to my car so I could start it for him, because I would be damned if I was going to leave it there any longer or put up with the squeal. Well, I got it in it, popped the hood, made sure the AC was on and then cranked it up... Sure enough not 5 seconds after start up it started SCREEECHING like a mother. BTW, I am still waiting for the call back from the dealer that my parts are in. Approaching 10 days now. |

Must be something with the Alpine White... My 2011 335d is in the shop right now for the exact same problem. I think it's the a/c compressor. Seems to draw a lot (mph gauge), about 5-7mpg... I hope its nothing serious, and that the dealer diagnoses it right. (crossing fingers)

belt needs to be changed
Took my D in 9000 miles same squeal when AC kicks on in after start for ~10 seconds, evil sound really. Service advisor said AC belt separate from other belt and is known cause of the problem. They need to use a narrower belt than the stock AC belt, that had to be ordered. I will let you know part number when they replace it next week.

After having my belts, tensioners and pullies replaced, the SQUEAL is back. It seems as though a few dealers are intalling an aftermarket belt to address the issue. For those that have had the aftermarket belt installed it's still to early to tell if it addressed the fix or not.
BTW, this thread needs to be moved to the diesel subforum. |

New Belt
They replaced the belt today. Interestingly they did not give invoice. New belt is front belt, MutiRib 325K-4. Made in Korea. SO far so good.
From what I can find, the new belt is 5mm shorter than stock. Last edited by archaicbark; 08-19-2011 at 05:18 PM.. Reason: spelling horrible |

Its probably a bad bearing in one of the tensioners. Them ordering all the parts is most likely them being precautionary, since they had to come from Germany.

No. I had all of the tensionors and belts replaced, squeal came back. BMW appears to have deduced the problem to the OEM belt that is stretching to much, thus the need to order a shorter aftermarket belt.

That's odd. On the domestic veichles I've had, the tenstioners on the serpentine belts are really forgiving to stretch.
Never heard of a problem like that before. Not saying it isn't happening, just never heard of it. |

It appears to isolated to the "d." It also appears to be more common then many first realized. I guess after BMW paid to replace one to many tensionors, pullies, and belts only to have customers come back with the same problem weeks later they finally seem to have it narrowed down to the belt. Hopefully this does it. I am waiting on long term updates from those that have had the aftermarket belt installed before I take my car back to the dealership.

Yeah, I've started experiencing this too on my '11 335d with 8K miles. Every morning in 70 degree weather, when I turn the car on and also have the A/C turned on I hear this sound. Every single day. I think it is time I take it in to the dealer. Any one else notice this in their cars? Is this the (HPFP-like) issue that is going to plague the "d"?

V Belt
I experienced the squealing noise upon start up of the car - lasted for a while and then disappears. Quite embarrasing given my car was brand new. Still under warranty I took the car to BMW and they changed the vbelt. Within a 6 month period the same noise occured and I took the car back to the dealership, they changed the v belt again, well at least thats what they said. The service lady told me that the supplier gives them poor quality products and they dont know why.I expected top quality products from BMW and nothing less. Clearly this is not happening. Its been 14 days now and BMW customer service have not called me to explain.

I have yet to take my car back to the dealer to replace the belt with the latest belt fix since the squeal only happens during hot summer months, so I have not had to deal with the noise for a few months. Did you get your belt replaced either time with the aftermarket belt? |

Yes there is a bulletin on it. BMW came up with an aftermarket belt as a replacement. So far I have not heard of any recurrances from those that had their belt replaced.

Guys,
There is a just slightly shorter belt (part # 11-28-7-520-177) that may dealer installed recently, and most of the dealers are not aware of that. Unfortunately my car was hit in the parking lot and was sitting in the shop for two weeks so I don’t know if the noise is gone. I’ll report later is the noise is gone. |

Yay, add me to the club!
Starting doing this a couple weeks ago (21k miles on the clock now). This is just after starting up and pulling out of the parking space.
