Yeah I just heard about this yesterday! I'll be getting to Germany later this summer and was hoping to get some Ring time in over the next 3 years.

I went to the ring this past summer and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had and probably will ever have... I hope I get the chance to go back again.
This rumor has been going around for years though, I hope it's not actually going to come true.

I'm really hoping that a closure does not happen but it looks like that currently at this time.

For those who speak German: http://www.handelsblatt.com/politik/...g/6886660.html
The situation is not good, but there is still hope. Pretty sure someone will be found to keep it open. The availability of the track for "touristen" will depend of the buyer of course... I have the impression that was getting increasingly difficult over the past years due to too many other activities, including car manufacturers conducting test sessions. |

I am very lucky to have driven this track before this happened, along with seeing the 24hr race a few years back. I had a bad feeling that this renovation would bite them in the ass, especially that stupid roller coaster.

I just told my girlfriend to prepare for a trip in the next several months, I'm not missing out on the chance to drive that track.

Would really be a shame to lose The Nurburgring. Ironic track for as long as I can remember. Watching F1 as a boy, Jackie Stewart nick naming it the 'Green Hell' and Niki Laudas wreck there all the way to recent times with all the sports car makers running against the clock to nail good times to take a place near the top of the Official Ring list.
I think many of us refer to the list to see where the cars we like(or own) place. Bragging Rights to the max. I almost did the ED when I bought my BMW. Had it all planned out as far as countries visited and what to do. Of course the Ring was on our itinerary but the wife and I couldnt coordinate schedules so we didnt do it. Still had it on my bucket list though. I hope it can be saved. |

I think it's sad that the 'Ring is going to be closed but there's a reason why the 'Ring fell out of favor in the racing world, why FIA GT holds less events there, why F1 completely left, and why they aren't making money.
As a professional race track, it's simply an extremely dangerous place. It features changing elevations over hundreds of feet, extremely long straights, blind corners, blind chicanes, off-camber turns that have killed unfocused drivers, and if you do crash, good luck getting an ambulance in less than 10-15 minutes while you bleed to death on the asphalt. The 'Ring will always have a historical place as a benchmark track for all the major performance car manufacturers, but I think it's time the motorsport community evaluates what made the 'Ring captivating, take the good, and integrate that into a newer, safer, but still enthralling race track, for the good of the sport. Then I could see a place like that being not only profitable, but also safe, and still entertaining for us all.
