Adam,

The more I do these trips, the more convinced I become that virtually every square foot of land in the Mid-Atlantic area has been the site of some interesting historical occurrence. It's almost astonishing.

It's also intriguing to see how entrepreneurial and innovative the U.S. used to be. Build the world's longest stone arch bridge across a major river, because we need more rail lines? Sure, let's go! By comparison, now it takes forever just to repave an existing highway. Our "can do" spirit seems to have diminished an awful lot.

On the other hand, working conditions are generally far safer than in the past, pollution has greatly abated, and so forth. It's all a trade-off; I'd just like to see us "reach for the stars" a little more often.

Dang--there's that soapbox again! [/soapbox]

overboostin,

Thanks! These were all great roads for motorcycling, as you might expect given that many of them were recommendations from the motorcycle touring magazine RoadRunner. I'd encourage you to try them out!

Fabb,

Hey, I'm glad you gave it another try!

As for the saturation, it all started when I installed a JB4 in my photo editor…

Great trip report - love the history and the scenery.

But man - lay off the HDR button. Way too much overprocessing in the pics.

I live in Chester County, and now I'm going to need to get my 328xi coupe up into those hills once the leaves start changing color. Who needs Vermont?

PS - I love Vermont, and VT/NH/ME/NY are the best for color.

Floyd,

I suppose the Olympic Mountains will do, in a pinch…

I concede that you've got us beat on the mountains--but we have more Civil War history! (Nanny nanny noo noo!)

As for touring out west with you, that would be great. Some years ago I drove from Seattle to Bellingham to Vancouver and back, but it was all on freeways.

All the best,

Matt,

Thanks much!

I've been going back through some of my earliest trip reports, from 2006 and 2007, because I'm having to change the links to the photos. (Thanks, Comcast, for eliminating the online storage space for long-term users like me. ) In the process, it's been fun to see how they've changed over time: definitely longer, HDR photography, sometimes better and sometimes not. And still so many more places to visit!

yipronny,

Great, thanks! And it's very kind of you to characterize my reports as "relaxing," as opposed to "soporific"… Either way, I'm glad you enjoy them.
