I always thought the I-Drive needed a Back button; and now it does.

Does this mean that the idrive will be standard on the 2009 3 series? Or that the updated idrive will still be an option that you have to get the nav package to get?

I like it, I'm just a little dissappointed that it won't be coming to the 09 E92/3s. My lease ends in a year and I wanted to pick up an E93 335i, it doesn't exactly change my decision, just a little annoying to know that a year later the E92/3 will be getting a refresh.

You can use the menu button as a back button. It doesn't always take u to the main screen. It will take you to the previous screen.

This seems weird to me. I think they need to get rid of the Knob period... they need to go to a more competitive touch screen

I like the I-Drive as is. You rarely have to take your eyes off the road. I never have to go to the main screen to get to other options. If I am on the nav screen and want to go to say radio I pull and hold the knob in the down direction and there I go. It works for all main categories.

BMW is maybe the only system that has no disabled options when the car is in drive, unlike some other automakers. If you go to a touch screen they will have to disable certain option in drive, b/c the Darwin Award nominees will start getting in accidents..

Just my $.02

I like my iDrive and all, but I don't see why the buttons would be distracting. I would imagine that it took a while for most of us to realize what direction we needed to go for our desired function. I think it will be the same and in no time at all users will know which button to press without looking.

I am wondering if I might have missed anything that suggests that the '09 e90 [Oct '08-on] will have the two-tone interior like the refreshed 5er, the 1er, and the new M3.

touch screen? so the driver will need to reach far out to work the idrive/controls? what are you thinking?

from the looks of the picture, the more buttons seems like it'll be more of a burden. they should just eliminate buttons period and go with touchscreen. personally, german technology is no comparison to the japanese. it should just be simplified!!!

LOL with the screen at where it is now, it's a bit hard to reach over and tap it for a touchscreen....

I have mixed feelings about the added buttons on the wheel and console. I definitely applaud the more "user friendly" quick access buttons, but I think they could have left out a few. Now it looks like an Audi console with tons of buttons around everywhere and I personally find it more distracting.

With this version, you would end up looking down to see which button to press.

I do agree that overall the UI does need an overhaul, but this looks like a move in the wrong direction. We'll have to trust that they know what they're doing...
+1

i thought the purpose of introduce iDrive was to eliminate buttons as human+car interaction increases as more and more technology added to the vehicle....if every particular system (audio, A/C, Nav, telephone, on board computer, vehicle setting...etc etc) all have their own buttons, then there will be like 60+ buttons on our center counsel (reminds me those damn Acuras.... too many buttons), and iDrive integrated nearly ALL of them in to one knob and its all in your control....

quick access button sure is a but more friendly for most people, but seems to be a step backwards, its not that hard to hold the idrive knob into the direction for a second or two for quick access.....

"zhp" e90, wow, i can't wait. my lease's up next july perfect timing. i hope they don't bump up the price too much. an e90 335i with m3 suspension and brakes would be so sick.

i think its too many buttons. i like it and all and i was hopeing that there could be some buttons but trying to remember where everything is while driving too might be a bit too much.

from my count there are 7 buttons plus the knob.

its weird....in 2006 E9Xs....there's three including the knob (knob+Menu+voice command)....
then in 2007-2008....there's only two (knob+menu)....
but now in 2009...there's seven....

I used to think the idrive was a good tradeoff for the ability to do stuff while the car was in drive, but after experiencing it, i realized that it is so slow to program in an address using the knob that i might as well have pulled over to do it. there are times like on the freeway on a long trip that changing destinations is ok and you have a lot of time to do it but on most touchscreen navs you can search and enter in less than 30-40 seconds. on the idrive, it is more like 1-2 minutes.
