i say just do it only if your going to buy the carmax extended warranty. Otherwise you can find it cheaper if you look harder.

You don't need to do walnut blasting on the n55 as much as the n54. Valve cover gasket on n55 isn't as common as the n54. Hence the term while the n55 is known as more 'reliable'

The 335is n54 engine is a tank but at 75k miles you are going to get headaches down the road unless the car has all receipts of service records. For 21k and 75k miles you might as well shop around for an e90 m3

With respect:
BMW I6 is significantly more reliable than BMW V8
M car is going to carry significantly higher routine maintenance costs
335is has a 370 torque boost at a low RPM; e90M has to rev high to get into its power band
Both have DCT
M has suspension, electronic LSD, and some “nicer” interior trim elements
I’m sure the 75k miles V8 headaches are far worse than the I6

I’ll probably get flamed for this (advance apologies), but in the “cannot afford a new or CPO BMW with a warranty and maintenance” market, I prefer the 335is.

Also: call a BMW dealer with the last 7 of the VIN and see if it’s still under maintenance and/or warranty. Usually carmax cars are not, but every now and then they are.

I just bought an IS with a DCT in April this year with 50K on it and paid 21K WELL worth it IMO. But at 70K miles the one listed is a tad high.

Seems a bit steep for that kind of mileage imo. Any and all maintenance expenses are coming out of your pocket. So be prepared to spend another few thousand on that.

For reference, two years ago I bought a 2013 e92 335i w/20k miles for $30k. Obviously much more expensive than what you're looking at here but the low mileage meant it was still under factory warranty for a year and since I bought it from a BMW dealer, they extended the warranty for an additional 3 years under their CPO policy. My car is also fully equipped: Nav, cold weather, M sport, xenon, Coral red interior, etc. I don't have to deal with the headaches of DIYing every job on this car and pay out of pocket for parts. I have been DIYing my cars for years but there comes a point where you just want to enjoy driving and not spend every weekend underneath the car.

It's not a run of the mill 335. It's an "is".
Things that might fail are as mentioned before WP (you will change the T-stat as well). Not a huge deal. After I purchased my 2nd hand "is", the WP failed, the injectors failed (2 of them), and the pullies were a bit noisy.
Did all the needed maintenance and changed the plastic charge pipe preventative.
Turbos should last quite a bit, especially if the car wasn't modded. It has the upgraded turbos, so no worries here. The exhaust flap probably has also failed, and you will have a loud rattle - either you unplug the sucker, but then there will be a very loud start up noise, or a bit on the costly side AGA has a repair kit.
I did also the walnut blasting, but every direct injection engine will have the issue. Other than that pretty solid car.

People comparing what they paid for their 335 really doesnt matter. This is a 335 IS. Different category and thats why u pay a premium

That's a fair point..

However, I did find a couple 2011 335is with similar miles and asking prices in the high teens. I still think 21K is too high for the car you posted, especially given what is currently availible. Good luck!

P.S. I have no connection to any of these listings.

Yes!
- Extra cooling
- Torque boost. Super easy to break the rear tires loose with this.
- Special exhaust (sound / loudness is somewhere between stock and Performance)
- DCT transmission ($$$)
- Gargle on downshift

The N55 turbo doesn't go, its pretty rare for it to fail.

N54 commonly develop waste gate rattle which can go for a long time but they eventually fail completely.

Hey guys! Thanks for all the input so far, I really appreciate the advice! I didn't purchase the car - yet. I was talking it over with a buddy and he also agreed it was a bit high. I decided to wait on it for a week and see what happened. Well, it's still there. I know Carmax drops their prices after a certain amount of days, but not exactly sure how that works. Someone could snatch it up in the meantime, but there's always another one, right?? There's no need to pull the trigger now, but the desire is high!

I've seen a 2011 335is here with 57k miles for 18k

The car max price is over priced

So I just found another option, and it's right down the road from me:

https://cargur.us/lKBrJ

More money, yes, but it's also 2 years newer. My hesitation is the black wheels. I'm thinking maybe the black on black with black wheels is a bit too much. What say you guys?

I say look at the bones of the car, not the superficial stuff like wheels, spoilers, etc. Wheels come and go, buy new ones, trade them, sell them, etc if you don’t like them.

Get the mechanicals looked over, check the maintenance history, look at market value for the car. Don’t look at the color and superficial accessories lol

Good point. I'm going to go and have a look at it Wednesday (if it hasn't sold by then) and see what's what.

UPDATE:

The car is still for sale, and they dropped it by $1000. Now sitting at $19,998. Getting very tempting but for some reason something is holding me back.

lower the mileage the better unless your willing to put a few grand in the maintence up front. Just remember to get a PPI done before you buy the car.

The car is at least 3,000 overpriced, that's what's holding you back.

I would buy a 335is with 70+k miles for 16k CPO. No more
