update:

This new N55 is for MY 2011 3 and 5 series sedans according to my sales rep that gave me that original info spec sheet. The N54 remains on the IS coupes/cabs and Z models.

UMMM i think maybe it might be the other way around E92 getting it not th eE90??... THe LCI has passed for the Sedans, and has what 2 years left? replace the engine with 2 years left wouldnt be the best idea finacially for bmw, for the E92 i can see it maybe happening.

Basically guys, us N54 owners are getting a free upgrade. We have a detuned version of the 335is, while new buyers need to purchase the 335is to get our engine. The N55 is nice and an improvement stock, true but it is nowhere near as cool sounding as a "Direct Injection Twin-Turbo Inline Six."

Most of us are already making more than 335is #'s in power for a couple hundred bucks, so what's your point BMW? Are you trying to fool those unaware of the N54's capabilities?

In all seriousness though, I am sure the N55 will have one very important, critical improvement: reliability.

If it isn't better in reliability, then BMW either wanted to cut costs with a simpler engine or wasted their time (and our time) making a new engine.

Time will tell.

Change is good... not always, but usually. We'll have to see how all this turns out.

10% reduction in fuel economy for the N55 engine? Am I reading that wrong?

I think they worded it wrong. It shows -1L/100km which would translate to an increase in MPG.

335i will be called the 335is now so not sure what you mean. You mean the base models?

No, it's right.-1 means it drinks 1 less liter per 100K which translates into better fuel mileage. Less is good in this representation.

What they worded wrong is calling it a "reduction in fuel economy" rather than "reduction in fuel consumption" or "improvement in fuel economy".

In any case, this looks like +valvetronic -weaker boost system. Assuming they're still trying to keep the low-lag naturally aspirated "feel", this single turbo would still be quite small. The lower weight is a bonus, but I have a suspicion that aftermarket hp upgrades will not be nearly as dramatic as the N54's.

so essentially if we tune our N54s, we have a 335IS without the DCT

Was there any mention on the 740i that uses the N54 engine? Is that going to be replaced by a N55?

I read the memo to mean that ALL models using an N54 will have an N55 instead, except the 335is, Z4 35i, and Z4 35is.

So that would be the 135i, 335i, 535i, 740i, X6 35i and probably LCI X5 too.

That is how I read it - the next question is which auto transmission will be available with the new N55? The new 8-speed or old 6-speed?

It's just hilarious reading the skeptics For the past 3 years now, there have been hundreds of posts bitching about the hpfp issue, and when BMW is about to introduce a new turbo engine, what do the fanboys have to say about it? That they're glad they got the N54.

Just because something is less doesn't mean it's inferior. Less weight, less fuel consumption, less mechanical complexity but same power and torque rating. What's wrong with this spec vs the N54, anyone cares to ponder? Nobody here is a BMW engineer or has even test driven the N55, yet that still doesn't stop the skeptics from mouthing off baseless speculations.

Man oh man, my lease is up October....just in time to either buy (if I stick with BMW) an end-of-production-line MY10 or a beginning-MY11.
I was gonna buy this next one too....now I'm all afraid to buy the new one again because of the new engine. Heck, the only reason I leased my current car was I wasn't sure about BMW reliability back then....
