I averaged almost exactly 30 mpg in 38000 miles in a Mk5 mapped GTI, pretty varied driving, never had any issues with the DSG.

Fantastic car, proper all rounder, you'd seriously question what else you'd need if you had one.

Steve, is this car as well as the IS-F or to replace it?

If the latter, didn't you have a bet with someone about the F being a keeper?

MPG is not great on a motorway either, something to do with the 2nd turbo kicking in around 2000rpm (70 mph).

1st gear ain't great but it pulls well from 3rd / 4th / 5th.

Prior to my 123d coupe, I had a 320d (163) and I much prefer the 123d to that, despite the 'low rent' interior
Thanks for that, i did think it might do 50 average though and i have a very heavy foot.

But neither are a suitable IS-F replacement - will this be an additional car?
yes mate. maybe. im considering flopping 35k on google shares to add to my stash

Steve, I have owned a 123d M Sport Coupe.

I liked the car and on a day to day basis was more fun to drive on my daily commute (country A roads) than the 335d. I averaged 43mpg (manual box) from the car and the handling was good but had a bit more roll than the 3 series.

My interior was Lemon Leather with door cards the same colour and the rest was black and to me was not low rent and only slightly inferior to a 3 er but no big deal. The size of the car was similar to the E36 3 series and I would say has a similar feel to drive but a bit more refined.

The car felt 'brisk' but never really fast but after the 335d and a Boxster that is no surprise really but in reality plenty of real world go.

Sold mine a couple of months ago and currently have a Cooper S Hatch on order to scratch my fun car itch.

If you need more details just let me know.

The bet was a oner, and with me, and I think the agreement was to spend it on something track orientated. The Silverstone Porsche experience sounds good Steve??

Good luck with the car hunt

Our GTI has a dsg box and the mechatronics unit has failed around £1500 to repair but its under warranty so no problem

To be fair one VAG garage said there is no way of testing it ,so on advice i went on to another ,the senior tech said i will do a 1/2/3 .what is that

1 Reset the gearbox

2 Fit a new mechatronics unit

3 Replace the whole gearbox

I had it Monday and we are now going straight to 2 just awaiting parts from Germany .

I hope my ED30 DSG is ok because it is running REVO Stage 2 on the box and stage 1 on the engine so it isn't gentle...

Hurdy had it running over 450bhp with a 100 shot of NOS too, slipped the clutch packs if I remember reading correctly...

You know me though... I just thought 'fuck it, what will be will be...'

Ive had three DSG golfs, all running 250BHP+, all ok bar the bod standard MKV R32 that I had, that developed a rattle at 3500 miles, and they just replaced the whole box. On all my modified DSG Golfs, no problems.

My last car was a 123d coupe, was remapped to 249bhp and was fun although not as good handling car as the e9*.

What else do you want to know?

I think you need to sit in a 1 series to fully appreciate the 3 series...

Things to do when sat in a one:

Dislocate arm to get the front windows down.
Weird seat position and tilt goes way far to back if not careful
Cheaper feel

BUT it was a good car when you ignore some of the imperfections.

Tax is cheap, ecomimical although not by much on the remapped Pre LCI 330d I have...

Insurance cheap...

Can recommend the 185 e9* Steve. Cracking to drive, very flexible, and (currently) 43mpg with a heavy foot.

I had the 123d M-Sport 3 door and it was a great car really.

However, I wouldn't buy it for economy, the 320d touring auto we had was better economy wise, used to get 45mpg from that and only 39 from the 123d, also an auto.

The problem with the 123d is the gearing, shorter final drive to make it far pacier, but this hits you on the motorway.
In the 120d we had before sat at 80mph you would get 48mpg, at the same speed in the 123d you only got 37mpg, big difference.
If you sit at 70mph you are at 46mpg, but who does that?

All in all a far more fun car than the 3 series imho, and I enjoyed my mapped 123d more than I did my mapped 335i if I am honest, but I wouldn't buy another one, for mile munching I would get a new 520d, about the same price when you work it out over a couple of years and it would be a nicer way to gobble the miles.
