If you watched enough court tv shows, you already know enough that to prove that they actually did it, you must have proof "beyond all reasonable doubt". Unfortunately, there is quite a considerable amount of doubt here.

Just because they left the note there doesn't mean they scratched/keyed your car and took the registration. Anger is not enough to go on because anybody who is angry that day could have walked by your car.

Since there are no witnesses and no video cameras to record and the area is in plain common public area, anyone could have gone there and destroyed your car. Be it a drunk retard or some punk kid. The question is, how do you prove in a court of a law that he actually did it ??

it's almost like you are walking back to your car after lunch and your car is parked on the corner. Your car is keyed from bumper to bumper and there is ONE guy who just so happens to be walking away around that corner and he is on his way to work. How do you prove he did it , if assuming you didn't see it, there are no witnesses, and there are no video camera?

I don't see the problem. The two idiots left a note on your car. By coincidence your car is vandalized at the same time. Most courts would side with you.

File a police report and get some estimates. Make sure you file a criminal complaint so they will be charged.

If you don't file a police report and continue to hang out with any of them then it is your own damn fault and you can kwitcherwhining.

Reasonable doubt only applies in a criminal case. In a civil case, preponderance of evidence is the standard, which means it is more likely than not that they did it. The Op could always file a civil suit against his "friends," but he might still lose, but his chances are not so bad

Just FYI ..in civil court its not "beyond a reasonable doubt" thats for criminal court..for civil the standard is much lower it "a preponderance of the evidence".

A smart person would know that police would NEVER run prints for keying someone's car....

1) Too much money
2) Waste of time

Prints do not guarantee anything. You would have to have proof that NOBODY touched the car previous to this event.

You would need to prove the person was in the vicinity of the area at the time at which it occurred. Impossible because there's nothing to document the time frame etc.

List goes on....

OP, sorry to hear about this. Hope this gets sorted out for you.

I'd go talk to them in person. Don't be stupid about it but be like Man who else would have done this other than the people who left the note. I expect you to pay for it or I'll have to get the police involved. Nevermind that the police won't actually do anything, they don't know that. Be like the fines are gonna be more expensive than just buying me a new trunk. If they say something about the police not doing anything take it to civil. Don't need to be straight aggresive in their faces but you gotta let em know. Man-to-man people act a lot differently than when their talking through their friends. There's a thin line between confrontation and threatening, and I think that's what you need to shoot for.

To me it's the principle behind it that would enrage me even more than the money it costs to fix. They keyed the car and should pay up.

right, no one would ever dare key scratch a modified 335i out of respect for such an automotive legend...

OP - you know what to do. file a police report & take them to court. sounds like they were just your buddy's roommates anyway. maybe the paint can be restored for less than you are anticipating. get some estimates.
