Don't add oil until the car asks you to. It will tell you how much you need to add. Mine asked for 1L last Friday, and that was close to 11 000km (No previous refill on oil). A technician told me this was well within tolerances (According to him, BMW states that up to 0.6L per 1000 km is okay).

Consuming that much oil consistently, to me, it is a sign of bad engine. My 2 cents. |

I check the oil in my E90 from time to time (don't think of it too often) but it is always "full". I disagree that middle is "normal". I don't think it's necessarily a problem, and still in tolerance, but not normal. Full is full. Middle is not full (of course it's not half full either). I have over 10,000 miles and it hasn't dropped any at all.
Haven't checked it on the E91 yet.....

That consumption quote is a general BMW engine rule-of-thumb. My E36 328 burned no oil whatsoever. My E46 330 burned a quart every 3000-3500 miles, so far, the E90 doesnt burn any oil.
In terms of break in procedure, I question it. I got my E36 at a younger age, and I didnt heed the break-in procedure to the tee. On the E46, I followed it explicitly, and the car did burn oil. The E90, I drove it easy for the first few hundred, then revved it quite a bit. I have heard things from mechanics that it is perhaps better to drive the engine harder in the beginning, as rings and such seat better when they are exposed to more heat and stress. I will say, my E46 always felt a bit soft compared to a friends 330 that did not heed the break in, and my E90 feels a bit stronger than the 330. Eh..just rambling! |

It is completely normal for a BMW to consume oil. It is best to wait until the car tells you to add... when it gets to the MIN... and not any sooner. Again... DO NOT add oil unless you are MIN or if the car tels you to add.

True, it's not good for the engine to have too high a level of oil. I don't know exactly what that could cause, but I'm not enclined to try it out just for the fun of finding out...
