Oh, okay, but I wouldnt use diesel from an "affordable" fuel station, I only use name brands like Shell or Chevron, We have a "Rotten Robbie" affordable station around here, but I just dont trust it, maybe if I had a VW tdi....

Quick trip hardly ever carries diesel fuel, I fill up both my truck and bmw at race trac and havent had any issues. Its funny that currently I have only diesel vehicles and no gasoline ones

Quick Trip has just recently come to Charlotte and most of them have diesel here. It's usually at least @$.08 a gallon cheaper than the shell stations.

if i go down the road north or south the shells charge 3.99, that is just too much a premium to pay. For that differential I can get a cetane booster and such for it. For 8 cents difference I'd definitely fill up at shell lol. What about mobil, is that good diesel ? |

Along the highways and interstates, pretty much all stations have diesel. I drive on 121 to and from work in Frisco but they are almost all Racetrac and QT. I remember when we bought my wife's VW Golf TDI last Oct, the sales guy said it wouldn't matter where I bought diesel from. Thanks to you guys I avoid the cheaper fuel stations in both our cars! Hopefully it'll make a lasting difference!

I've used Racetrac's many times when I am in Florida. They are very populated and I haven't noticed a difference in terms of quality of diesel.

Unlike gasoline I don't believe there is much of a difference from one diesel brand to another other than price. I'm more concerned with finding stations that do a good volume of diesel and have "fresher" fuel in their tanks than with the brand. These stations are usually the ones with the cheaper prices near highways. I've used QT since they've opened and I've not seen a change in mileage, engine sound or power.

For example there is a major brand station very close to my house with one lonely diesel pump in the back, often blocked by parked cars. I've never seen the pump being used and I will never go there. On the other hand there is a private brand station a little further away that is also a fuel oil and mobile diesel distributor (for construction/farm vehicles). New above ground tanks, lots of trucks filling up. I go there. While I only have 32K miles no additives have ever been used, and I've never had an SES light or issue (yet). |

Over here in LA, I try my best to use only Chevron and Shell. The station near work, where I fill-up most of the time, currently costs $3.95/gal.
I love how the station near my house takes advantage of the freeway exit and charges $4.89/gal. Price never moved since I bought my car back in 11/11. Bet that station's diesel tank never dried up...

...and old thread, i know, but since my 335d is new to me - i thought i'd bring it back. i've filled up 5 times since i picked up the car in february and have spilled diesel fuel all over the asphalt twice. at 2 different fuel stations. recently, while at a modern shell station, i was on one side of the pump and a X5 35d was on the opposite side. she was staying warm in her X5 35d while fueling when the tank hit F and diesel started spilling out of the tank. i thought, damn! that sucks. 5 minutes later (super slow flow rate from pump), the same thing happened to me. luckily i was standing guard at the pump and stopped it quick. last week, at another station, the diesel was flowing super slow. it took 10 minutes to fill the tank before the diesel fuel began spilling out all over my car. this is crazy. i've tried putting the nozzle in at off angles and everything else i can think of. is this a pump issue or bmw design issue or (likely) both? when i did not have this issue, the flow rate was normal. i'm thinking that the low flow rate may be problematic.
with this thread being 3 years old now, has there been any resolution? otherwise, i'm enjoying the car very much. glad to be back in a BMW. i'll never stray again.

My resolution to this problem is using the pump to its max. I have noticed that half way trigger pulls and slow fills will end up with diesel on your foot.

The miss-fueling restrictor sometimes keeps you from completely pushing the nozzle into the fueling pipe. Sometimes it's necessary to hold and lift the nozzle a bit to get it to line up properly.

I second that. You can do a google search about how the stop mechanism works.
Couple of years ago I always had issues with the handle refusing to engage open unless I inserted it 180 degrees upside down

The only time that I have experienced overfilling was when I used the little black nozzle adapter. So now I just try to avoid stations that don't have the smaller non-semi-truck-sized nozzles.
