Note to feuer:

Been quite busy with no time to take the rear apart and validate measurements before cutting ...
Calipers will go out for modification based purely on your numbers :-)

The big question for you:

The mounting holes on the hub can be enlarged with a drill / reamer or do they need to be enlarged sideways for the caliper to clear the disc ?

I recall a sketch in of your posts showing that they needed to be enlarged outwards (vs concentric) but cannot seem to find it any more.

Both. F30 caliper bracket bolt is a larger diameter and the hole needs to be elongated outwards a couple mm's for the caliper to clear the rotor.

The bolt on F30 is larger so you can re-drill it, make it wider, moving away from the hub. I pretty straight forward.

I've been reading this thread in detail.

If using F30 rear m performance calipers, my understanding of the best way to do this is to take 3.5 mm from the caliper and 3.5 mm from the knuckle.

Is this how it's being mostly done? I'm a little wary of taking 7 mm from just the caliper alone.

Best way is to use 535i rear rotor and shave the caliper 4mm. Anyhow, I was the first who mount the rear, with shaved 7mm calipers, and 3 years later, probably 20 track days, still holding up just fine.

In a perfect world that would be the best solution but it triples the amount of labor and time by having to remove the rear knuckles and having them machined as well. If it's not your daily, no big deal. In my case I can't really have my car on jackstands for a few days while I get it sorted. With just machining the calipers it's a afternoon job.

Machining solely the caliper to 12 mm sounds ideal. However, there was some concern brought up earlier in the thread that the inner pad may drag on the rotor because the caliper isn't completely centered on the rotor if solely the caliper is machined (and not the knuckle).

Any further discussion regarding this?

Thanks.

I'm on my second rear set and have not experienced any pad drag with neither OEM BMW nor TRW pads.

Just wanted to clarify something. What do you mean by "custom fitting?" Like a jig to make sure it fits?

What numbers exactly did you end up going with?

Yes. They made a custom fixture for their CNC machine to machine the caliper perfectly.

I have to say... That's really freakin' cool. I'm away from FL for the next 2 mo, but will get this done with them when I'm back. Thanks everyone.

Looks very nice.

Which method did you go for? Just machining the calipers down to 12 mm?

Fronts were a direct bolt no modification needed. Haven't considered the rear yet
