Sim driving is fun, but without the feedback of a vehicle, it feels quite numb. In real life, you can feel rotational forces when you're over or understeering, but there's zero feedback aside from maybe a vibrating steering wheel... Same on braking, when braking hard you can feel the weight transfer in a real car and if you lock up, you can feel that weight transfer shift back, but there is no weight transfer in a sim... Without that feel, how do you really know when you're on the edge? It's like there's a whole bunch of feedback loops that don't exist when sim racing that are super important when in a real car. Just watched that gran turismo movie and it just had me thinking... Max being super into it and also dominating in F1, curious if he's ever commented on it. I know he wanted to provide a sim to real racing pathway, so it has to be on his mind.

I read about this earlier, MAX was piloting some AMG and he spun but recovered well to keep on top.

Rapid Robbie was on the cusp of being signed with Alonso in the Ferrari F1 team for 2012 but a horror crash with his wrist being speared by an armco barrier rallying a Peugeot car sidelined that.
Nevertheless the Pole has now been signed for the Ferrari AF Corse hyper car team in the WEC for '24.

Short of having a parallel path with intense fitness training it's not likely SIM racing will ever see a crossover to real racing at the highest levels. Not even the team F1 simulators can recreate the extended g-forces that drivers must be able to handle lap after lap. Add to that the heat, noise and vibrations and it's no wonder F1 drivers need to be in extremely good physical conditions. Even then races like Qatar just push people to their physical limits. It's easy for an F1 driver to do SIM racing, but impossible to go the other way.

Well, that's what the whole Gran Turismo movie is about, real story. Jann Mardenborough got the opportunity to race real cars just because of his sim skils. He raced in quite a lot of circuits, up to Formula E, Formula 3, Super Formula,... Yes, drivers need to be physically fit, but that's not to say all sim racers are fatasses who aren't fit, or capable of being extremely fit. If there were more of these opportunities, I feel like we'd be guaranteed to see some excel all the way to F1.

Risky IMO with regard to gearbox endurance / reliability. But then again teams make these sorts of mechanical component changes nearly every season.

Indeed , It's risky for Ferrari . Because MAX got in the first 3-4 races downshift lag with the smaller RB19 gearbox.
The RB19's smaller gearbox was really required to make room for A.Newey's wider diffuser and the complex of the sophisticated 'Venturi tunnels (ground-effect) to reduce the RB19's porpoising .

So , what Ferrari comes up with is just a copy&paste from the 2023 RB19 gearbox.
Can be a hit or a miss for Ferrari in this 2024 season ...

With this alloy steel they're going use for the reduced width gears they are hoping will be tougher and their reworked S flow duct will work better to expel air quicker and provide more cooling for the slim g/box.

Ever wondered about MAX's Belgian road driving test, well he passed it with a difference of opinion with the test examiner about pedestrian crossings and a misunderstanding about turning left.
He competed in some F1 races before taking it and is in the book of records as the youngest driver in f1 forever.
( I failed mine first time out on a 'highway code' question but got my motorcycle one first time, how about you my friend.

The show that never ends with what all the leading teams' cars are up to leading up to the launch dates, still a painful wait away.

Yeah . I heard that already in 2015 about MAX's drivers license here in Belgium
I even know the examiner that he got , it was the same examiner that I got back in time ...
It is well known ...The guy is a piece of 5H1T.

He tried 2 times to screw me , but I passed the theoretical and the practical exam from the first time .
Maybe you guys won't believe it ...That MAX and I got our driver license at the same place .
The best drivers in the world , got it there !

MAX further said to the guy : I don't give a 5H1T about my Belgian driver's license !
All I want is winning F1 races ..
Of course , that was big news . That's why we could read that the next day in my local newspaper
