Okay so I've read the whole damn thread and now I'm strongly considering it. (Damn you guys!!!!)
I've been looking for an exhaust solution that will give me something much louder than stock. But I'm a bit afraid about it being too loud. I wish there was someone out in the Cleveland are that has done this so I could hear it. My last car was an Altima V6 with a resonator delete and dual Magnaflow 5x8 ovals with tips. Looked fantastic and sounded good. Truthfully it could have been louder for me though. At one point one of the Magnaflows came loose so I removed it for a day or two. So I was running one side (after a Y) as a chopped pipe and one with the Magnaflow. It was a bit too loud. So for my 330 I'm looking for somewhere in between. Any of you muffler delete guys have an opinion? Someone wrote in earlier that if you don't push it, the delete (with the resonator still there) sounds almost stock. It's when you lay into it that it gets loud. Is this true for all you guys? Last question - I have an 06 330. Are there any issues with removing the stock muffler with all those wacky plugs and stuff? I think there were a couple of 330 owners that did the delete. Let me know. Thanks man |

Going to Midas at lunch for a quote. They did my Altima and did a good job.
I could try the muffler delete if it's cheap. If I don't like it I can do a resonator delete and try to shoehorn a Magnaflow or Borla in there.

They came back with $150 plus that I supply the tip.
Not a great price considering what some of the other members have said they paid! Guess I'll keep lookin

Labor plus stainless pipe.
Yeah I think they saw BMW and decided it stood for Big Money Waster! When they did my Altima I had to shake em down till they got real on the price. I'm still shopping but I'll give them a chance to be realistic. They did do A+ work on the Alti so at least I know their quality.

Just another thought on this.
If I do the muffler delete, keeping the resonator, and It's too loud... Why couldn't I leave the delete piping in place and just replace the resonator with a universal round muffler? This way I can adjust the sound with inexpensive universals instead of rewelding in the stock unit or paying a fortune for the made-for-BMW bolt on units. Just thinking outside the box a bit. Any comments?

Muffler Delete done!!
I stopped by the muffler shop just to talk over the job and just went ahead and did it. OMG!!! It sounds fantastic! I was so paranoid that it'd be hella loud, but it's perfect! A bit of drone here and there but nothing real bad. I ride a Harley with drag pipes and although I like my bike real loud, I just want my car to sound mean, but not obnoxious. Well it sounds mean! I love the downshifts too! A little of that burbble sound like a V8. At idle it sounds almost stock. If there's any loss of low end torque I didn't feel it. At higher revs it pulls even stronger. BTW I went for a single oval tip (I'll try to post some pics later). The only regret is that had the shop let the tip stick out from the bumper a couple of inches. Now I wish I would've pulled it in a bit. If it really bugs me over time, I'll have em cut it and pull it in.
The job cost a bit more than I wanted cuz I had em do it in stainless and use stainless wire on the welds (midwest salt country here) Total ran $140 out the door including tip. Best exhaust mod for the money!!!!!

After speaking to a Midas tech about deleting my muffler, he advised me not to. He said that BMWs need a certain back pressure from the exhaust because of a valve in our engine that needs to be engaged or something along those lines (he wasnt very articulate). Anyway, any input on this?

Done a muffler delete on a 325 xi. Manual trans. What a cheap way to get a great sound. Not loud at all (only when tromping it)...no drone on the highway. $100 labor and stainless steel pipe, and $55 for tip. My muff shop done a great job of doing mandrel bends, and stretching pipe diamaters for a good fit to the old exhaust system, and to the tips. Used 2.5 pipe and magnaflow tips. I would think twice about doing this to a auto trans. though.
