Can you record a sound clip? Apparently lot's of ppl mistake normal direct eng noise with ticking noise in 335.

I'll do my best, pretty sure I can make a recording on my iPhone. My sports car sounds like a diesel

I supposed my feeling is this: If it was normal, why did my car did not sound like this up until now - something has changed.

Mine is back again after couple weeks of silence.
I think other brands should adopt ticking on their engines as well, makes owners feel special

My feelings and story is exactly the same. I did an oil change and it seemed to help ... may be it will help you too. The car was tick free for few month and now with temps dropping I heard it a few times again. It is not too bad but I don't think it should be there and that is a normal sound.

Oil change won't help. Been through quite a few changes already and after a week, you'll just hear it again. My guess is that it has to do with the oil not reaching the top of the cylinder/piston (I'm not a mechanic but its my guess) on cold starts, and there is friction which makes the tick. As oil circulates, it'll provide viscosity and reduce the friction.

I agree with your point but you've got to keep in mind that between 330/328/325 and 335 we are talking about two different engines N52 and N54. There is certainly a relation between them and they are sharing same variables valves/lifters (often out of spec) therefore the ticking sound. But design of oil pathways, valves and pressure are different. I think the ticking noise in 335 has to do with a bad lifter and if it is just slightly out of specs oil change might help but yes you are right oil change won't fix a sticky lifter. Also, in 335 I am yet to see ticking noise getting worse as quickly as I did in 325 as well as it disappears completely in 335 at higher rpm's and did not in 325.

For all who was told by their dealerships that the ticking noise is normal here is the copy of the work order from my dealership. They did replace the cylinder head. They did try the bleeding procedures before to no avail. The cylinder replacement was done recently. It is pretty cold here in upstate NY and I think that I still her some sort of ticking but I cannot be sure 100%. I might be too prejudice at the moment. I will wait a while before forming my final opinion.
I must say that even after they confirmed the ticking noise they had to wait for the BMW field engineer before proceeding with the replacement. At least this is what I was told.

Wonder is this is a new part number for the cylinder head? Anyone know?

How long did it take them to do this swap? I'm guessing 2 days to wait for parts and another 2 days to actually do it?

Also, after the cylinder head swap, any effect on performance or did the technicians tell you to take it easy on the car for a brief period? Would be interested to hear whether the ticking comes back, as my car will be waiting for a BMW tech to look at it in early Jan.

Nothing was said about taking it easy at all. Brought the car Thursday and picked it up Monday. BMW rental during that period It is too early to make any comments about any changes in performance. I will post back if/when ticking comes back. Any other questions I will be glad to answer.

glad to see that you were able to actually get work done on the car in response to the problem.

P.S. I love the 55 gal drum of 5W-30 on your invoice. I should surely hope it was N/C

I have been doing the bleeding for 3 times now in dealer and couple times myself on highway. Totally waste time! No matter what, the ticking always comes back!

Last week the tech finally heard the ticking and FINALLY admit it might be the lifter problem and is willing to check the lifter! So I am going back to dealer next week again! @#$@#%

I know its a problem too, but I'm not getting anywhere with the dealership as the bleeding is the only process they can do themselves, anything beyond is handled by Head Office. They requested a BMW Canada technician to come look at the car next week and hopefully, the noise will be there when the technician is there.

Unfortunately in Canada, we don't have a "lemon law". I'd love to lemon this car as it has other issues as well, but the only way I can get out of this is to pay another $20k + taxes to get a new 335xi which I can't justify plus it'll send my bank account to 0.

Talking Fastlane

The ticking or clicking started in my 07 E90 at less than 5,000 miles; Was off and on until 14k; I mentioned it to the ASM on my first service visit and was told there was a campaign on this issue; This is a quote as to the fix; "The tech will take the RPM;s up to 2500 and hold for five minutes" That was the fix.. I have not had any ticking since! No explanation as to the cause, just that "THEY" were aware of the problem..

I've had that done already and didn't help at all. Just came back a week later. Hope it works out better for you.

You can do the same thing by yourself on freeway. It WON'T fix the damn ticking!
