Thankfully I was able to get another OEM air box from one of the members to do my test intake and this is the end reult.
I wouldn't recommend anyone to do this if they are turning in their lease anytime soon.
It wasn't that hard but it was time consuming with measuring and looking for the right accessories. But, some ABS piping, a K&N filter, and shop vac hose made it come all together.

The filter in the bumper area is higher than the opening so it should skip all of the rain and debris from the road.
Enjoy the pics.
Best DIY designed air box upgrade yet. Good work.....

Is it opening under the filter? I couldn't see by the pictures. After looking again, I can see how it opens near the runners.

If I showed you 8 full dynos with next to no IAT rise using the STETT intake, would you believe me? This is not on the road where you get good airflow, or a "dyno glory" dynojet roller, but sitting on a load bearing Mustang dyno.

For what it is worth, if you want a RAM style, why not use a CAI and build an enclosure?

It's not poorman's Dinan intake... it's "not stupid buying dinan intake"

I like it and had been considering something similar.

Just FYI, keep an eye on the ABS pieces. They start to get soft and slowly deform when they hit about 150 F. The melting point isn't too much higher at 221 F.

Ha ha, this is brilliant.

Honestly, it should compete with any intake out there. I especially like the fact that if you were to get some water on the cone intake (which some are concerned about in that location) the air flow would still be there from the normal inlets.

What a no-brainer for any quick witted vendor out there. A simple aluminum elbow with a threaded end butting up against a flange would work perfectly, followed by a pipe and cone filter.

nice work

thats pretty cool, as for the laundry room comment.. i think it actually fits fairly well.. since the oem air duct has a flex joint in it allready, and so does the hose that Mr.5 put in..

good alternitive for DIY'ers. Im sure theres a easy way to make it more flashy for the ones that prefer that.. cause i also am sick of the look of DCI's.. Just nothing out there has really perked my interest at all

Interesting. I have a feeling this setup will make more power on the dyno, but perhaps not on the street, since you are losing the ram air pressurization of the OEM airbox. Very interested to see some VBOX #s. Either way, nice to see people thinking outside the box.

I have to say, I've read your posts and you're definitely always thinking and trying different things. Very creative, Mr. 5! Good luck with your testing!

I remember on the E36 Dinan CAIs, they also offered a sock to place over the element to enhance protection.

I really appreciate the props guys.
I don't know if I'm really going to market it though.
This is kind of like the Mr. 5 catch can. I made it and that's it.
Who knows though, if I get a crap load of persuasion then maybe.

So I went for a drive today and it feels really strong.
The best thing I like about it is that it sounds identical to the stock air box.
I know a lot of people like the sound of the turbos but I personally like the sound of a tuned engine accommodated with a nice sounding exhaust.
I'll see if I could get a baby sitter for tomorrow so I can dyno test it before Christmas.
I'll do with stock air box and then with the Mr. 5 intake.
Dynos will be done with the hood closed.

The funny thing is when I saw the Dinan intake thread I thought to myself I would give it a week before someone tries something like this I actually though of you to. Nice job with it. How is the sound? Like stock?

That's the only way to go if you want a realistic result.

Were the fans blowing directly on the DCIs though? I have a hard time comparing results from a car with DCIs with fans blowing right onto the filters whereas the stock box obviously won't do as well.[/QUOTE]

+1.. close the hood and then tell me the difference. I don't like open hood dyno's, doesn't replicate real driving conditions..

If you read the (lenghty) Dinan article about how to correctly dyno a car, they say that opening the hood helps in fact create realistic conditions, because the dyno fans cannot blow enough air so extra cooling is needed in order to avoid unrealistic timing pulling on the dyno. I did my dynos with hood closed until I read that article but it changed my mind. However, when testing intakes I think almost no approach can truly replicate real driving conditions.
