Glass Doctor only uses OEM by default, OE glass on request.

Safelite replaced mine about a year ago as well for $300, no complaints it is still holding up even after getting hit by a few rocks last week.

Not true. I have rear pilkington and side from saint gobain. I bought my car with 13 miles on it.

Got it done at their shop. Took them an hour. Was fast and easy. Seals were oem. Everything was great. I kept an eye on them while he was working on it. He said he wil take care of it like his very own. I was pleasantly surprised by the clean work he did.

+1. I just did the same two months ago with Safelite. Awesome service, Pilkington glass and the pricing is right. The appointment setup online is very easy.

I did order the upper strip beforehand because I thought they wouldn't have the part...they did but it wasn't the BMW OEM part I'd bought. So I kept theirs as an extra.
Highly recommend them!

Thanks for replying. I plan on a shop install too. There's a new Safelite shop in Charlottesville I just noticed opened. The parking lot fix I've just never been comfortable with. If there is a tool the tech needs or discovers a seal needs replacement he doesn't have, he's fudging the job and moving on; no thanks.

I wouldn't do it at a new shop unless the tech is experience. I asked my tech how many e92s he has done and he told me quite a few so I was more confident with the work.

Roger that. I'll dig into the experience bit. I'd guess the shop is a new location, but the staff is experienced. I also plan on providing all new trim parts and pieces, just so they have them.

Thanks for the info.

Duh...it's a BMW. Plan on selling it at some point? No question that emblem on the glass that indicates it's OEM is invaluable to a potential buyer.

Plan on keeping it until it disintegrates out from under you? Up to you sir...

Which brand was yours?

i originally was thinking i want OEM in case I resell the car

but I am starting to think PGW is good enough? half the price and strogner glass

i do want the BMW emblem on the glass though thats another reason to get the OEM

Honestly I don't know, even if that sounds bad lol. I just know I went through Safelite and it was around $300 I believe!

I reality though no one would ever notice.

I would personally go with OE/OEM though although the thought of my 335i only being worth $5k in 3-5 years may make me think about saving some money.

There is a very good reason for OE/OEM instead of cheapest and it is a matter of safety. The windshield is part of the structure of the car. The airbags are designed to contact it also. The type of urethane used to install it and the substrate the urethane bonds to are all very important. BMW has very specific tolerances for this. Don't risk you or your passengers life by going cheap. Most dealerships use outside vendors but there is a factory repair procedure for windshield replacement.

There must be a run on silica sand as just got a quote from Safelite on a windshield replacement. Holy cow...

Equiv OEE (I'm assuming that's OE) - $510 installed
OEM - $750 installed

Should have gotten done last year as it was about $100-200 lower. Just putting this out there for others. I'm located outside Philly.

Hi guys, I'm in the process of replacing the windshield (w/rain sensor) on my 335d. I got a few offers from BMW and local shops but I can't decide on what to go with.

1. BMW official service - $650
2. Independent shop 1 - $300 for a Pilkington branded glass
3. Independent shop 2 - $300 for a Nordglass branded glass

I'm leaning towards 2 as I recently saw a Pilkington windshield on an e39 and it looked fine, no distortion that I could notice and the rain sensor was working as intended.

But just to be safe, what are your thoughts and experience with the quality of Pilkington and Nordglass windshields?

Any distortion? Unusual reflections? Does it scratch/chip easily?

Personally, all I care about is whether it says "Pilkington," "PPG," or "Sekurit-Saint Gobain." I never had good luck with SGC glass.
