I believe I read that the New N55 have half as many Cats... Frankie, your stock exhaust system post DP has no cats right? Leads me to believe their is only 1 Cat on the DP, god knows what the cell count is on them

Mine has 2 resonators on the midpipe. The N55 has 2 cats, however its in 1 canister if that makes sense? The cat is on the downpipe, its one large canister that houses 2 cats in that single canister. I can get the cell count info as well, I need to wait until tomorrow though when I get to work. |

Dual Cat in 1 Canister? So if a Catless DP is made, you truly are Cat-less...
I don't see why a Muffler Delete would make a difference though, seeing how shockin330i said he felt like he lost hp with a MD. All the back pressure is essentially still their... Although after having looked at the inside of an E70 muffler, I can see how their is a ton of pressure: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...m-exhaust.html Anyone opened up one of the E90 mufflers?

I was able to access my N55 manual online. Here is a pic right out of the manual to get a better idea. Also I attached pics of my stock exhaust, you can see the 2 resonators as well. This is what I mean about the 2 cats in 1 canister. Ceramic structure 1 has 600 cells and Ceramic structure 2 has 400 cells Here is my stock stuff after the downpipe. |

But too bad you didn't do a dyno shockin when you had the MD, so that we could have had a good comparison

Ok... That's good... BUT I think those big canisters aren't resonators, I think those are actually cats themselves, probably 600 cell each (the '08 335xi I had prior to getting the E70) had two canisters (same size and dimension) and they were 600 cell Cats.
I bet if you cut those bastards open, they are cats and not resonators. Your looking at a total of about 2200 cells between the main cat (1 and 2nd Structure) and the cats on the exhaust. The N54 was running with 2400 cells total (pre and post cats). BMW is not going to reduce the cat cell count by an extreme amount

They are definetely not cats. Here is another quote from the N55 manual. They are resonators. Remember the N55 engine is also alot more efficient and less emissions due to the Valvetronic that the N54 did not have. If they were cats the post cat o2 sensor would be after the downpipe. As you can see its in the middle of the downpipe between the 2 cats. "Exhaust System With the single twin scroll turbocharger , the design of the exhaust system is less compli-cated than that of the N54 engine, with two turbochargers. In addition to a near-engine catalytic converter design, the exhaust system also features a center silencer and two rear silencers. Note: Due to the high efficiency of the near engine three way catalytic converter , no additional catalytic converters are necessary." |

Ok... Sounds good enough for me... Still curious to see what gains Frankie's vanguard system gave over the stock one, or no gains at all...

" What do they mean by a 3 way cat? It looks like a 2 way cat to me. Unless the DP cat(s) are counted as one, and the 2 things I'm calling resonators are the other 2 cats? I would be more then happy to forward the 100 page N55 pdf manual to anyone who wants to poke through it. Alot of good info in it. |

I wonder why they added them on the XI? Unless like you said in the PM, maybe there is a difference in downpipes. When I go to work tomorrow I will try to find more info. Ill check to see if the part #s for the DPs are different to start, and try to find more solid info about the cats.

Three way, usually means three cats... The N54 was a Four way cat system (correct me if I'm wrong)

YOur primary cats are on the DP... It's the 2nd cats that are in question... Are they hiding somewhere in your stock exhaust piping, or do they just not exist at all...

You very well may be right and Im wrong. Maybe Im reading into it the wrong way and they are cats. Yes the N54 uses a 4 way cat system, and the secondary cats on the N54 look like whats on my exhaust, like I said, you may be right. But also, lets assume for a min the 2 canisters in the back are cats to complete the "3 way" cats. Why on Frankies car, does he not have any? So that would mean he has 1 cat? So where do they get 3 way from? The manual doesnt get that in depth and break up differences between XI and I. I will see if my service info at work has more detailed information then whats in my online manual. |
